Accentuation and Stress of Words

Contextualization

The Portuguese language is one of the richest and most complex in the world, with a wide range of rules and exceptions. One of these rules refers to the accentuation and tonicity of words. Accentuation is the act of distinguishing the stressed syllable, in other words, the strongest syllable in a word, by using graphic accents. Tonicity, on the other hand, is the classification of words according to the location of this stressed syllable.

In our daily life, we use words with different accents and tonicities. Therefore, it is essential to understand these concepts in order to improve our writing and reading. Correct accentuation allows the reader to understand the writer's intention and also helps in the correct pronunciation of words.

In this sense, this project seeks to develop your ability to identify and correctly apply the rules of accentuation and tonicity in Portuguese words. Through practical activities, you will be able to improve your knowledge and skills in these concepts.

Practical Activity: "Building an Accented City"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to reinforce the understanding and application of the rules of word accentuation and tonicity in the Portuguese language. Students will create, in groups, a model of a fictional city where the streets, neighborhoods, parks, schools, businesses, etc., must be named with words that have different accents and tonicities.

Detailed Project Description

The groups will be dedicated to building a scale model of a city. This city must be organized according to the accentuation and tonicity of the words chosen by the students. For example, all street names could be proparoxytone words, and neighborhood names could be paroxytone words.

The materials for creating the model may vary according to availability, such as paper, cardboard, cardboard boxes, recyclable materials, playdough, etc. Creativity is free for the construction of buildings, houses, green areas, and other elements of the city.

Required Materials

  1. Paper or cardboard for the base of the model
  2. Recyclable items (cardboard boxes, PET bottles, etc.)
  3. Glue, scissors, adhesive tape
  4. Colored pens, crayons, paints
  5. Toothpicks (for name plates)

Step by Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should start by discussing and planning the structure of their city.
  3. Define the tonicity of the words that will be used for the different segments of the city. Ex: oxytone words for schools, paroxytone words for streets, and proparoxytone words for businesses.
  4. Collect the necessary materials for the construction of the model.
  5. Start building the model, taking care that the words are properly accented and their stressed syllables are properly identified.
  6. Finally, present the model to the class, explaining the structure of the city and the reason for the choices of words and their respective accents and tonicity.

Project Deliverables and Report Guidelines

At the end of the project, in addition to the oral presentation, each group must submit a report containing:

  1. Introduction: Contextualizing the accentuation and tonicity of words in the Portuguese language, the need for your learning, and the objective of the project.
  2. Development: Explaining the process of building the model, the choices of words, tonicity, and where they were applied in the city. The methodology used for the choice and application of the words should be detailed, along with any challenges encountered and solutions adopted.
  3. Conclusions: Review the main points of the project, mention the learnings obtained, and conclude on the application of the accentuation rules in practice in the project.
  4. Bibliography: Indicate the resources used for the theoretical research and to guide the practical activity.

This report integrates and complements the practical work carried out, providing reflection on the process of accentuation in the Portuguese language and the importance of teamwork.
