Reading is one of the fundamental skills in our lives. From when we wake up and read the time on the clock, to when we go to sleep and read a story before closing our eyes. But reading is not just deciphering words, it is much more than that. Reading allows us to know new places, cultures, people, and ideas. When we read, we are traveling without leaving the place, we are living lives we would never live.
Shared reading and advanced autonomous reading are two forms of reading that can help us discover even more of the world through books. Shared reading is when we read together, whether with family, friends, or schoolmates. In this form of reading, we can discuss what we are reading, share our ideas and opinions, and learn from each other.
On the other hand, advanced autonomous reading is when we read alone, independently, and are able to understand what we read deeply. In this form of reading, we are the only guide of our journey through the text. We can stop, go back, read again, look up words we don't know, and make connections with other things we already know.
Introduction
Shared reading helps us develop social and emotional skills. When we read together, we learn to listen and respect each other's opinions. We also learn to express our own ideas clearly and respectfully. Furthermore, shared reading helps us develop empathy because when we read stories about people from different cultures or situations, we can put ourselves in their shoes and better understand their emotions and experiences.
On the other hand, advanced autonomous reading helps us develop cognitive skills. When we read alone, we have to use our prior knowledge to understand the text. We also have to use reading strategies, such as identifying unknown words from context or inferring the meaning of a word from clues in the text. Additionally, advanced autonomous reading helps us develop concentration and discipline because we often need to read for a long time and continue even when the text seems difficult.
Both shared reading and advanced autonomous reading are important for our development as readers. Through them, we can discover new stories, new ideas, and, who knows, even a new love for reading.
Practical Activity: "My Literary Journey"
Project Objective
This activity aims to develop in children the skills of shared and advanced autonomous reading. Additionally, it seeks to stimulate teamwork, creativity, and communication. Through the project, students will also learn to value reading as a form of personal, cultural, and emotional enrichment.
Project Description
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will choose a children's literature book to be read together. After the shared reading, each student will select a passage from the book that they liked the most and will work on it to make a presentation to their classmates. The presentation should include the advanced autonomous reading of the passage, meaning the student should read the passage alone, understand what they read, and then present it to their classmates.
Required Materials
- Various children's literature books
- Paper, pencils, colored pens
- Cardboard or poster board for creating a panel
- Materials for decorating the panel (sequins, stickers, etc., if available)
- A tablet, computer, or smartphone with internet access (for researching unknown words, if necessary)
Step by Step

Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students and provide each group with a children's literature book.

Shared Reading: Students should read the book together, sharing discoveries, emotions, and opinions about the story.

Selection of Passage: Each student should choose a passage from the book that they liked the most and find interesting to present to their classmates.

Advanced Autonomous Reading: Each student will read the chosen passage alone, trying to understand the meaning of unknown words and the nuances of the story.

Presentation Preparation: After the advanced autonomous reading, students will prepare a presentation about the chosen passage. They can make a drawing, write a summary, create a dialogue between the characters, or any other form of expression they find suitable. The important thing is that the presentation shows what they understood from the passage read.

Panel Creation: Students will create a panel to display their presentations. Each student will have a space on the panel to attach their work.

Final Presentation: Each group will present their panel to the class, explaining what each student understood from the passage read.

Discussion and Reflection: After the presentations, the teacher will lead a discussion with the class about the importance of shared and advanced autonomous reading, the different interpretations the students had of the same book, and what they learned from the activity.
Delivery Format
Students will deliver the project in the form of the produced panel, which will be displayed in the classroom. Additionally, each student must submit a text explaining what they understood from the passage they read and how they managed to understand it. This text can be handwritten or typed, depending on the availability of resources.
