Communicative Contexts

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

Communication is a fundamental part of the human experience, allowing us to share ideas, emotions, and information. In the study of the Portuguese language, it is essential to understand not only what we say, but how and where we say it. A communicative context is the scenario that encompasses the sender, the receiver, the channel used, the code employed, and the message being transmitted. This environment can be physical, such as a classroom, or virtual, such as an internet chat, and each requires an appropriate approach and use of language.

To communicate effectively, it is necessary to consider the context in which the interaction takes place. This implies understanding aspects such as the interlocutors' culture, the prevailing social norms, the purpose of the communication, and even the body language used. When we neglect the context, we run the risk of being misunderstood or of not achieving our communicative goals.

The concept of context is even more relevant in today's globalized world, where multicultural interactions are increasingly frequent. Discerning the different communicative contexts is a key skill for navigating a diverse society, allowing not only for better expression and understanding, but also fostering mutual respect and empathy in the dialogue between different cultures and social groups.

Contextual Application

In everyday life, we face a variety of communicative contexts. It could be a casual conversation with friends at school, a formal request in a store, or even a public presentation. Each situation requires a different way of communicating, whether in the choice of words, the intonation of the voice, or the gestures. Thus, developing the ability to recognize and adapt to different contexts is a passport to successful social interactions and to success in academic and professional settings.

Furthermore, with the rise of the internet and social media, communicative contexts have expanded, and the line between formal and informal often becomes tenuous. Knowing when to use more careful and respectful language or when it is acceptable to use a more relaxed and colloquial tone is crucial to avoid misunderstandings and build positive relationships, both personally and professionally.

To support your learning and encourage debate on the subject, I suggest the following reliable resources:

  • Portuguese Language Textbooks: These often have chapters dedicated to effective communication and communicative contexts.
  • Portuguese Language Portal: An online platform that provides access to information on grammatical rules, uses, and variations of the language (www.portaldalinguaportuguesa.org).
  • Brazilian Academy of Letters: The official website of the ABL presents extensive material on the Portuguese language, including issues of use and stylistics (www.academia.org.br).
  • CANAL EDUCAÇÃO - MEC: Educational videos related to the Portuguese language and its uses in different contexts (tvbrasil.ebc.com.br/canal-educacao).

Practical Activity

Activity Title

"Dramatizing the Contexts"

Project Objective

To raise students' awareness of the importance of communicative contexts and their influence on the use of the Portuguese language, promoting understanding and adaptation to different communication situations.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will create and present short dramatizations, representing different communicative contexts. They should identify and apply the appropriate linguistic and non-verbal nuances to each context, reflecting the cultural, social, and emotional variability present in communication.

Materials Required

  • Dramatization scripts (created by students)
  • Simple scenery and props (can be drawn on paper or brought from home)
  • Camera for recording (can be a smartphone)
  • Video editing devices (optional)
  • Paper, pens, and pencils for notes

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Theory Study: Students should research communicative contexts, using previously suggested textbooks and digital materials. Estimated time: 30 minutes.
  3. Context Selection: Each group chooses three different communicative contexts (e.g.: formal, informal, digital) to explore in their dramatizations. Estimated time: 30 minutes.
  4. Script Creation: Students create short scripts for each context, including appropriate verbal and non-verbal elements. Estimated time: 1 hour.
  5. Scenario and Props Preparation: Groups produce simple scenarios and choose props that help represent each context. Estimated time: 30 minutes.
  6. Rehearsal: Students rehearse their dramatizations, refining acting and communication. Estimated time: 1 hour.
  7. Presentation: Each group records their dramatizations. Estimated time: 30 minutes.
  8. Video Editing: If possible, students edit the videos to enhance the presentation. Estimated time: 30 minutes.

Total Duration per Student: 4 hours. Project Duration: One week.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group will deliver:

  1. Dramatization Videos: Three short videos representing different communicative contexts.
  2. Written Report: A report following the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

The report should be written as a document complementary to the practical project, with the following sections:

  1. Introduction: Contextualize the theme "Communicative Contexts", emphasizing their importance in real life and the purpose of the project.
  2. Development:
    • Discuss the theory of communicative contexts and how they influence communication.
    • Describe the activity in detail, including the selection of contexts, the creation of scripts, and the preparation and performance of the dramatizations.
    • Present the methodology used for recording and, if applicable, editing the videos.
    • Discuss the results, reflecting on the differences observed in the communications of each context.
  3. Conclusions: Reflect on what was learned during the activity, highlighting the importance of adapting communication to different contexts.
  4. Bibliography: List all resources used for the theoretical basis and execution of the project.

When writing the document, students should integrate reflections on teamwork, time management, problem solving, and the effectiveness of communication in the different dramatizations.

Note: The videos and the written report must be delivered to the teacher one week after the start of the project, allowing for evaluation of both the knowledge acquired and the socio-emotional skills developed.
