Contextualization

The theme to be explored in our project is "Artistic Expression through Video and Photography". Art, since time immemorial, has been a powerful form of human expression, and the different forms of art, whether music, dance, painting, sculpture, or literature, have served as windows to the human soul. With the evolution of technology, new forms of artistic expression have been introduced, among which we highlight video and photography.

Photography, invented in the 19th century, revolutionized the way we perceive the world. Capturing a moment, a gaze, a smile, a scenery, in a fraction of a second, gave people the power to immortalize moments. From portraits of people, to vast landscapes and microscopic details, photography has become a powerful tool in the hands of artists. With the development of cinema in the late 19th century, the art of storytelling evolved significantly. Video made it possible not only to capture moments, but also to tell stories, convey emotions, and take people to a whole new world.

Artistic expression through video and photography is not only a way to express feelings and ideas, but also a means of communication, a historical record, and a reflection of society. In a world increasingly dominated by images, learning to use these tools can broaden our understanding of reality and allow us to express ourselves in increasingly creative ways.

In this project, we will explore the history of video and photography, the theory behind them, learn how they are used to express ideas, and finally, you, students, will create your own artistic expression using these tools. To help us on this journey, resources such as the book "The History of Photography: From 1839 to the Present" by Beaumont Newhall (Thames & Hudson, 2006) and the documentary "The Story of Film: An Odyssey" available on YouTube will be used.

The skills we will develop in this project include researching and analyzing different visual styles, experimenting and analyzing different forms of artistic expression, analyzing the composition of different scenarios related to the creation of visual and audiovisual arts, as well as developing socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Memories in Frames

Project Objective: This project aims to provide students with a practical experience of artistic expression through photography and video. The central theme is "Memories", a universal theme that each student can interpret in their own way. The goal is for each group to create a collection of photographs and a short film that portray their interpretations of the theme in light of the knowledge acquired about the history and theory of these art forms.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group must create a collection of photographs (minimum of 5 and maximum of 10) representing "Memories". In addition to this, they must produce a 3 to 5-minute short film on the same theme.

Materials Needed:

• Digital camera or smartphone with a camera
• Access to a photo and video editing program (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, etc.)
• Notebook and pen for notes and planning

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Research and Planning (2 hours): Students should start with a brainstorming session to discuss and decide how they will interpret the theme "Memories". They should research online to be inspired by the work of renowned photographers and filmmakers. A detailed action plan is recommended, including the description of each photo and video scene, the location, lighting, etc.

2. Production (4-6 hours): Next, students will shoot and film according to the plan. Remember to try different angles, lighting settings, and composition.

3. Editing (2-4 hours): Students will edit their photos and videos using the chosen editing software. They are free to experiment with filters, cuts, sound effects, etc.

4. Report Preparation (6 hours): Finally, each group must prepare a detailed project report, which should include:

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the purpose of this project.

   • Development: The theory behind photography and video, a detailed description of the activity, the methodology used, the selection criteria for the photos and video scenes, the analysis and interpretation of the results.

   • Conclusions: Conclusions about the work, lessons learned, and reflections on the creative and collaborative process of the team.

   • Bibliography: List of resources (books, websites, videos) consulted during the project.

Project Deliverables:

1. Collection of photographs (5-10 photographs)
2. Short film (3-5 minutes)
3. Written project report

Each deliverable should reflect the theme "Memories" and be an expression of the skills and knowledge acquired. The report should detail the creative process, challenges faced, solutions found, and lessons learned. This will facilitate the understanding of the project evaluation and emphasize the importance of the process, not just the final product.
