Verbs: Introduction to the Imperative

Contextualization

The English language, like any other language, is full of resources and structures that allow us to communicate various messages in a precise manner. One of these structures is the imperative, a verbal form used to express orders, instructions, advice, requests, or commands. Knowing and being able to use the imperative is essential for you to express yourself clearly and effectively, both in writing and speaking.

The imperative in the English language is especially interesting because it is very simple in terms of formation. It is generally formed using the base form of the verb (without 'to') and does not distinguish between singular and plural, making it very flexible and easy to use. The difficulty may lie in knowing when and how to use the imperative properly.

The ability to give and follow instructions is crucial in our daily lives, whether at home, school, or work. In the kitchen, for example, we follow recipes which are nothing more than a series of instructions. When we are lost, we ask for directions; when writing a formal email, we may need to give instructions in a polite and clear manner; and so on.

Furthermore, the use of the imperative is very common in team games, where clear and concise communication is vital. Therefore, learning about the imperative will not only improve your skills in the English language but will also help in your daily life and leisure activities.

Activity

Activity Title: 'Commander's Quest'

Project Objective

In this project, students will be challenged to create a simple board game based on English commands, the 'Commander's Quest'. In addition to learning about the imperative, this activity will develop skills such as cooperation, creativity, planning, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

Groups must together develop and create a board game that uses English commands in its gameplay. For example, each game card may contain a different command that moves the pawns around the board. Details of the game such as name, theme, rules, piece design, and possible strategies are up to the group.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or cardboard to create the board
  • Paper and colored pencils for the cards
  • Small objects or toys to use as pawns
  • Copies of recommended resources to study the imperative in English

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Gather and discuss the game concept: What is the board like? What are the rules? What commands will be used?
  2. Draw the board on cardboard or cardboard. Use creativity!
  3. Create the game cards. Remember to use English commands in the content of the cards.
  4. Choose or create the pawns that will move around the board.
  5. Test the game and make necessary changes to make it fun and challenging.

Project Deliverables

Groups must deliver:

  1. The created board game.

  2. A report containing:

    • Introduction: Provide context for the project topic (the imperative in English). Talk a little about what it is, why it is important, and how it is used in the real world. Describe the project's objective.

    • Development: Explain the theory of the imperative in English, the steps taken to create the game, and how this activity helped understand and apply the concept of the imperative. Present the game with all its details and discuss the results of the game test.

    • Conclusions: Summarize the main points of the project, talk about what was learned and the conclusions drawn. Report the skills developed during the activity, such as: Communication, collaboration, time management, problem-solving, creative thinking, proactivity, etc.

    • Bibliography: Present the references used to assist in the project, such as imperative study websites and any other materials that were useful.

The report should be written clearly and objectively. The board game and the report will be evaluated together, based on quality, creativity, correct application of the imperative in English, and the quality of the report.
