Genesis, evolution, and transformation of terrain are central themes in Physical Geography. The Earth's terrain is not an immobile entity, but rather a natural element in constant modification, resulting from a complex interaction of internal and external forces. Understanding this transformation process is essential to comprehend the different forms of terrain found on our planet.

Internal or endogenous forces, such as plate tectonics, volcanism, and seismic activity, contribute to the formation and modification of the Earth's terrain. These forces act slowly over thousands or even millions of years, building mountains, valleys, and plateaus.

On the other hand, external or exogenous forces, such as rain, wind, and temperature, act by wearing down and shaping the existing terrain. These forces are responsible for phenomena like erosion, weathering, and sedimentation, which alter the Earth's morphology and give rise to different landscapes.

Contextualization

Studying terrain transformations is crucial to understand how humans and the environment are interconnected. Different terrain forms directly influence the climate, the distribution of natural resources, human settlement patterns, and even the culture of different societies.

For example, humans modify the terrain to build cities, roads, dams, etc. These modifications have significant implications for the environment, such as changing river courses, habitat loss, and altering climate patterns.

Activity Title: "Shaping the World: A Study of Terrain Transformations"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to experiment practically with the processes that shape and transform the terrain of our planet, enabling a deep understanding of the geological processes that drive these transformations.

Project Description

In groups of 3 to 5 students, each group will choose a specific type of terrain (mountains, valleys, plains, etc.) to study. Each group will build a three-dimensional model of their chosen terrain, using modeling clay or clay. This model will be used to demonstrate how different geological forces (endogenous and exogenous) act to shape and alter terrain forms.

Required Materials

  • Modeling clay or clay;
  • Paint and brushes;
  • Cardboard or wooden base;
  • Water sprayer;
  • Hairdryer;
  • Reference books or encyclopedias.

Step by Step

  1. Research: Firstly, each group should research the chosen terrain type. They should understand how it is formed, which forces act in its formation and transformation, and what are the main characteristics of that terrain.

  2. Model Construction: Next, the groups will build the terrain model using modeling clay or clay. They should try to represent the main characteristics of the chosen terrain.

  3. Demonstration of Geological Forces: After building the model, students will simulate the geological forces. For example, to represent rain (exogenous force), they can use the water sprayer; to represent wind, they can use the hairdryer; to represent tectonic plate movement, they can manually modify the terrain.

  4. Study and Discussion: Finally, students should observe and discuss how these forces alter the terrain model they built. They should reflect and discuss the impacts of these transformations, both geographically and ecologically and socially.

Project Delivery and Written Document

At the end of the practical activity, each group must prepare an oral presentation explaining the work done. They should present the main conclusions about terrain transformations and their implications.

In addition to the presentation, each group must submit a written report on the project. The report should contain the following sections:

Introduction: In this section, students should contextualize the chosen terrain type, explain its relevance, and the importance of studying its transformations.

Development: Here, students should detail the model construction process, explain in detail the simulations performed to represent the geological forces, and present the results obtained. Students should critically analyze the results and compare them with the real patterns that occur in nature.

Conclusions: In this section, students should summarize the main results of the study, reinforcing what they learned about Earth's terrain and its transformations. They should also reflect on the implications of these processes in terms of human interaction with the environment and suggest more sustainable ways of interacting with nature.

References: Finally, students should list all sources of information used during the project work, whether books, websites, videos, etc.

Through this project, students will have the opportunity to experiment with the concepts learned in the classroom.
