Mathematics is a science that permeates our daily lives in various and sometimes unimaginable ways. For example, it provides the basis for understanding numbering systems, essential tools for counting, measuring, and recording information in various fields of knowledge.

But have you ever stopped to think that there are different ways to represent a number? In our daily lives, we usually use the decimal base system, where each digit place has a value associated with a power of ten. However, the history of mathematics brings examples of other numbering systems, each with its unique way of representing quantities. For example, the Romans used a system based on symbols for each number (I for one, V for five, X for ten, etc). The Babylonians, on the other hand, adopted a sexagesimal system (base 60), which is still used today to measure angles and time.

Exploring these different ways of representing numbers is the goal of this project. Through the study of 'Base Conversion,' we will learn a little more about numerical systems and, consequently, about the mathematics that surrounds us.

'Base Conversion' is a common practice in Computer Science, as computers and digital systems operate with the binary system (base 2), hexadecimal system (base 16), and octal system (base 8). However, its importance goes beyond this area, being a fundamental tool in various other sciences and technologies.

As part of this project, you will explore mathematical concepts, but also develop teamwork skills, time management, problem-solving, and creative thinking. Are you ready for this adventure? Let's go!

Activity Title: 'Exploring Numerical Universes: A Journey through Base Conversion'

Activity Objective:

This project aims to lead students to understand and explore the concept of 'Base Conversion' in numbering systems. They will be engaged in manual and digital activities to experience the practice of converting between different numerical bases, and finally create a presentation to share their knowledge.

Detailed Activity Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will take a journey through different numbering systems. During this journey, the group will have to solve mathematical challenges, convert numbers from one base to another, and finally, apply the knowledge acquired to convey this information in a creative and engaging way.

Required Materials:

  1. Paper and pencil for notes and calculations
  2. Computer with internet access for research and presentation creation

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Initial Study: Each group should start by researching 'Base Conversion,' using the recommended resources or any other reliable source. The goal is to understand the concept and learn the methods of conversion between different numbering systems.

  2. Solving Challenges: After acquiring a good understanding of the topic, the groups will receive a list of challenges that will include converting numbers between different bases. This will be the time to apply what has been learned and enhance their understanding through practice.

  4. Final Report: In addition to the presentation, each group must submit a written report on the project. This report should include an introduction to the topic, a detailed description of the activity carried out by the group, the conclusions drawn during the project, and the bibliography used.

    • Introduction: Here the group should contextualize the topic, discuss its relevance, real-world applications, and the project's objective.
    • Development: This section should contain the description of the activity carried out by the group, the methodology used, and the results obtained. It is important for students to explain in detail the theoretical concepts worked on during the project, through examples and the explanation of the methods of conversion between different numbering systems.
    • Conclusions: This space is for students to revisit the main points of the project, discussing what they learned and drawing conclusions on the topic.
    • Bibliography: Here the group should list all sources of information used during the project.

Remember: the report is as important as the presentation, as this document will serve for the teacher to assess the students' understanding of the topic and the practical application of the concepts learned.
