Textual Genre: News

Contextualization

In today's world, information is one of the most important commodities. We are constantly bombarded with news from all parts of the world, and our ability to understand, analyze, and interpret this news is fundamental to understanding the world around us.

In this sense, the textual genre 'News' stands out as one of the most important in conveying information. News is a report on an event that has just happened or is happening, and it has its own characteristics that differentiate it from other textual genres.

Introduction

News is an informative textual genre, whose main objective is the transmission of information about a recent fact or event. In this genre, the language is objective and precise, in order to avoid ambiguities and provide quick understanding for the reader.

The structure of a news story is also something to take into account. It usually starts with a title that draws attention to the content, followed by the lead, which is a paragraph with the main information about the fact. Then comes the body of the news, with more details about what happened.

Furthermore, it is important to remember that, although the news should be as objective and impartial as possible, it is impossible not to have some degree of bias, since the person writing the news needs to select which facts to include and how to describe them. Therefore, critical reading is essential when reading news.

Importance

The ability to understand, analyze, and produce news is extremely relevant in the education of students because, in addition to contributing to the development of reading and writing skills, it also contributes to the development of their critical awareness, preparing them to interact in a more conscious and participatory way in the world.

News, as a textual genre, is a powerful tool for exercising citizenship. Through it, we gain access to a wealth of information that allows us to form more well-founded opinions on a variety of subjects, shaping more active and participatory citizens.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Journalism Firsthand

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to lead students to learn important concepts about the textual genre news in practice. After studying the theory, they should choose an event within the school or community, such as a sports game, a presentation, or a festival, and act as reporters writing a news story about this event. In addition to Portuguese, the activity also involves the discipline of Social Sciences, as students will need to understand the context of the event they have chosen.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will be responsible for producing a complete news story, from collecting information to the final writing. The project should be carried out in stages, each with a specific objective. The stages are:

1. Planning

In this phase, students must choose the event that will be the theme of the news, develop a work plan containing the tasks that each group member will perform, and define the day(s) on which they will collect information and interview participants.

2. Information Collection

Next, students must attend the chosen event, take note of important facts, and interview people involved. The interview questions should be thought out in advance and focused on understanding the event as a whole.

3. Writing the News

With the collected information, the group must then write the news story. It is important that the news follows the typical structure of the genre, with a title, lead, and body of the text.

4. Revision and Finalization

Finally, the news story must be reviewed by all group members and adjusted as necessary before being considered complete.

Required Materials

  • Notebook for notes
  • Pens
  • Computer with internet access for research
  • Camera (optional) to record the event

Step by Step

  1. Divide the class into groups and explain the activity.
  2. The groups should start planning, defining the event and task division.
  3. Information collection should be done on the day of the event. Interviews and notes are essential at this stage.
  4. The news story should be written based on the collected information.
  5. The news story should be reviewed and adjusted until the group is satisfied.
  6. Presentation of the news story in the classroom for discussion with classmates.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver the complete news story in writing, along with the initial work plan, notes, and written report. The report should follow the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography. In the Introduction, students should contextualize the chosen event and the reason for the choice. In the Development, they should detail the process of information collection and news writing. In the Conclusion, they should reflect on the experience, highlighting what they learned about the news genre, the difficulties encountered, and how they solved them. In the Bibliography, they should indicate the sources consulted to support their journalistic practice.
