Textuality: Cohesion and Coherence

Contextualization

Introduction to the topic

Cohesion and Coherence are essential elements for the understanding and interpretation of texts. Understanding them means significantly improving reading and writing skills, as they allow the formation of clear and efficient texts.

Textual cohesion involves the mechanisms that link the different components of a text, creating a network of relationships that contribute to the main message the text intends to convey. It is established at the level of syntax and semantics, through linguistic structures that interconnect words, phrases, and paragraphs.

Textual coherence, on the other hand, is linked to the organization of ideas, arguments, and information in a text in a logical and fluid manner, so that the reader can understand it without problems. It is established at the level of content and discourse and is linked to the intentionality of the text producer and the interpretative capacity of the reader.

Importance of the topic

In the digital age we live in, with the vast production and circulation of texts on various platforms, cohesion and coherence are even more necessary. Texts without cohesion and coherence result in confusing messages and can cause misunderstandings, compromising communication.

Cohesion and coherence are also essential in academic and professional life. In the school context, the ability to produce cohesive and coherent texts can improve performance in subjects and exams. In the work environment, writing with cohesion and coherence can contribute to the clarity and effectiveness of communication, as well as convey an image of professionalism and competence.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Textual Journey: Discovering Cohesion and Coherence"

Project Objective

To explore the concepts of cohesion and coherence and apply them in practice, students will create a script and a theatrical piece in small groups.

This project will allow students to apply the concepts of cohesion and coherence, while developing collaboration skills, creative writing, textual interpretation, and theatrical representation. This artistic activity makes learning engaging and memorable, encouraging the practical application of linguistic and communication skills.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will be responsible for creating a script for a theatrical piece lasting approximately 15 minutes. The piece should be based on an original story created by the students that addresses a relevant theme for current society. The script of the piece should be clear, cohesive, and coherent, with well-developed characters and an interesting plot.

In addition, the script should explicitly incorporate four key theoretical concepts of cohesion and coherence: (1) referential cohesion resources, (2) semantic resources of synonymy, antonymy, and homonymy, (3) compound sentences by coordination, and (4) representation of different discursive voices.

The project will be evaluated according to criteria of content, structure, creativity, presentation, and collaboration.

Required Materials

  1. Notebook for notes and brainstorming
  2. Computer with internet access for research and script development
  3. Various materials for the production of sets, costumes, and props for the play (to be defined by the groups)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Students should study the concepts of cohesion and coherence through the provided references and others they find.

  3. Each group should choose a relevant theme for current society to be the basis of the play.

  4. Students should brainstorm a plot that includes elements necessary for the project. When developing the plot, students should pay special attention to the cohesion and coherence of the text.

  5. After completing the plot, students should start writing the script of the play, including character descriptions, settings, dialogues, actions, and scene transitions.

  6. Once the script is completed, students should revise it several times, ensuring that all required elements are present and that the text is cohesive and coherent.

  7. After finalizing the script, students should rehearse the play, making changes to the script if necessary.

  8. The group will present the play to the class.

  9. After the presentation, each group should prepare a report as instructed below.

Project Deliverables

Theatrical play script

Each group's script must be delivered before the play presentation. The script should be coherent, cohesive, and should cover the four key theoretical concepts of cohesion and coherence.

Play presentation

The theatrical play must be presented to the class. Each group member must participate in the presentation. The duration of the play should be about 15 minutes.

Written report

After the presentation, each group should prepare a report containing:

  1. Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme and the project's objective and explain its relevance and real-world application.

  2. Development: In this section, students should explain the theoretical concepts addressed in the project (cohesion and coherence and the four subcategories), the methodology used, the process of creating the script and the play itself, and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Students should conclude the work by summarizing their main points and explaining the learnings obtained from the project. They should also reflect on the skills they developed during the project, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

  4. Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, among others.
