Art: Ancient Greece

Contextualization and Introduction

Introduction

Greek art has exerted a significant influence on world culture, particularly in the areas of sculpture and architecture. During ancient Greece, art did not have a purely aesthetic purpose, but played a variety of political, religious, and social functions. In fact, Greek art was an essential form of cultural self-expression and a means of preserving historical events and myths.

Greek art is typically divided into historical periods, from the primitive art of the Geometric period (900-700 B.C.) to the Hellenistic period (323-31 B.C.), each with its distinctive characteristics and aesthetic evolutions. The technique, human representation, intention, and function of art changed radically throughout these periods, with integrated influences and changes from conquered civilizations.

In the Arts course, we will explore two key aspects of Greek art: sculpture and architecture. These stand out in the history of Western art and had a significant impact on the subsequent development of Roman art and, by extension, Western art to this day.

Contextualization

Greek Western art cannot be understood separately from its historical, social, and cultural context. Art is a product of its time and place, influenced by historical events, religious and social beliefs, natural environment, and interactions with other cultures.

Unraveling the process by which Greek art was produced and the circumstances in which it was used and valued will allow us to have a broader view not only of ancient Greece but also of the lasting impact of this civilization on our own culture.

Greek art, especially sculpture and architecture, was fundamental in shaping the Western aesthetic ideal, with its notions of proportionality, harmony, and realism. Recognizing these influences is an essential part of understanding why we value certain forms and styles of art to this day.

Students are encouraged to explore the resources below to gain a more comprehensive view of Greek art:

Students are encouraged to expand their research beyond the suggested resources. In doing so, they should ensure that the sources are reliable and academic.
