Contextualization

Bacteria are unicellular, prokaryotic organisms that can be found in almost every corner of the planet. They are incredibly diverse and play a variety of essential ecological roles, such as decomposition, nitrogen fixation, and oxygen production. Additionally, they are also important for human health, both in favorable and harmful ways. Some bacteria, for example, aid our digestive systems, while others can cause diseases.

Bacteria come in various distinct shapes, such as rods, spheres, spirals, among others. They are classified by both shape and type of cell wall, which is detected by Gram staining, a classic method in microbiology.

Historically, bacteria have been fundamental for the development of biology. It was through the study of bacteria that the first thoughts and theories about genetics and biochemistry emerged. Considering this, understanding these organisms, their structure, functions, and the impact they have on health and life as a whole is crucial.

Bacteria are an integral part of life on Earth and are crucial for its maintenance. They participate in biogeochemical cycles, such as nitrogen and carbon cycles, are essential in the decomposition of organic matter, and some species are important for human health, participating in the digestive process, for example. However, other species are pathogenic to humans, causing numerous diseases. Therefore, understanding these organisms is fundamental from both an environmental and medical/public health perspective.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Bacteria in Focus"

Project Objective

Identify and understand the characteristics of bacteria, exploring microbiology in an interactive and fun way. Additionally, study the diseases caused by bacteria and how they affect the human body.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be responsible for conducting in-depth research on a specific type of bacteria and a disease caused by it.

First, students should identify and study the bacteria, exploring aspects such as morphology, metabolism, reproduction, habitat, among others. Next, they should study a disease caused by their chosen bacteria, addressing aspects such as symptoms, treatments, and the importance of prevention.

After the research phase, the groups will create a three-dimensional model (using materials of their choice, such as clay, papier-mâché, recyclable materials, among others) of their bacteria, highlighting its main characteristics.

Finally, each group must give a presentation, where they will explain their findings and showcase the bacteria model to the class.

Required Materials

  • Materials for research (books, internet access)
  • Materials for building the 3D model of the bacteria
  • Presentation materials (posters, slides, videos, etc)

Step by Step

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Choose a type of bacteria to research.
  3. Use the suggested research sources to gather information about the chosen bacteria and the disease it causes.
  4. Prepare a report containing all the collected data.
  5. With the data in hand, build a 3D model of the studied bacteria type, highlighting its main characteristics.
  6. Prepare a presentation, in which the bacteria and the disease will be explained to the class.
  7. Present to the rest of the class, showing the model and sharing the acquired knowledge.

Project Deliverables

Students will be evaluated based on a well-structured report and the oral presentation they will give to the class. The report should include an introduction to the topic, development (description of the research conducted, methodology, results), and conclusion.

The report structure should follow the following format:

  1. Introduction: In this section, students should contextualize the topic, explain the importance of bacteria, the relevance of the study, and the work's objective.

  2. Development: In this section, students should explain the theory about bacteria, describe the bacteria they chose for study and the disease it causes. Additionally, they should explain the methodology used (research and model construction), present and discuss the research results.

  3. Conclusion: In this section, students should summarize the work, highlight what they learned during the project, and draw conclusions about the study of bacteria and the diseases they cause.

  4. Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources of information consulted during the research (books, web pages, videos, etc).
