Contextualization

The periodic table is undoubtedly one of the greatest icons of science, particularly of Chemistry. It is more than just a table: it is a puzzle that carries with it a gigantic amount of information. Through it, we can obtain details about chemical elements, from the lightest to the heaviest, from hydrogen to oganesson. It has become a symbol, a visual representation of the foundation upon which our entire world is built.

Historically, the periodic table was developed by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. Mendeleev did an incredible job organizing the elements known at the time according to their chemical properties. The empty spaces he left were filled throughout history with elements that were discovered later, proving the accuracy of his organization.

Introduction

The periodic table organizes the elements in a logical and predictable way, following patterns that are linked to the atomic structure of the elements. It is divided into groups (vertical columns) and periods (horizontal rows) that allow us to predict chemical behaviors, physical states, and various other properties.

By learning how to use the periodic table, it is possible to predict how elements will interact with each other, their characteristics, and even the existence of still unknown elements. It is in this predictability that the beauty of the periodic table is revealed, a tool that allows us to better understand the constitution of our universe.

Furthermore, the periodic table is not only relevant to Chemistry. It has applications in various areas, such as physics and biology. It is used in medicine, engineering, technology, and industry. Knowing and understanding the periodic table opens up a world of possibilities and scientific connections.

Practical Activity: The Elemental Challenge

Activity Objectives

  1. Understand the structure of the periodic table and its properties.
  2. Identify chemical elements and their families on the table.
  3. Explore the relationship between the structure of the periodic table and the chemical behavior of the elements.
  4. Integrate knowledge from disciplines such as Mathematics, in statistics to analyze the characteristics of the elements, and Arts, in creating a graphical material that represents the research results.

Project Description

In this activity, groups of 3 to 5 students will explore the periodic table, its elements, and structure. Based on the concepts learned and additional research, students should prepare a 'Conceptual Map of the Elemental Universe', where they will relate chemical concepts to other disciplines, such as mathematics and arts.

This conceptual map should be presented in a creative and innovative way, using different media and formats, such as a poster, an animation, a theatrical piece, a video, among others.

Required Materials

  1. Textbooks and support materials for consultation.
  2. Material for the elaboration of the 'Conceptual Map of the Elemental Universe' (papers, pens, brushes, glue, scissors, etc., depending on the format chosen by the group).
  3. Computer with internet access for research and report preparation.

Activity Step by Step

Step 1: Research

Students should research the periodic table, its elements, their properties, and the relationship between them. The group should take notes of this information and discuss how they can be visually and creatively represented.

Step 2: Planning

Next, the group should plan how to organize the 'Conceptual Map of the Elemental Universe'. Here, students should think about how to relate the studied concepts to different disciplines, for example, statistically analyzing the properties of the elements or representing the table by natural products that correspond to each element.

Step 3: Execution

After planning, the group should get to work and create their Conceptual Map. Remember, it is important to be creative and innovative!

Step 4: Report Elaboration

After completing the practical activity, the group should prepare a report detailing the entire process of producing the Conceptual Map, the difficulties encountered, the decisions made, and the results achieved.

Furthermore, the report should contain a robust description of the concepts learned, with a section dedicated to the analysis and interpretation of the data and information obtained during the research. The group should also reflect on how the created conceptual map contributes to a better understanding of the periodic table.

The final deliverable of this project consists of the Conceptual Map of the Elemental Universe and the written report, which must be clearly connected, demonstrating the cohesion between the theory studied and the practice carried out.

Remember, the review and editing process is essential for the elaboration of a good report. Therefore, allocate enough time for this. Considering the research, planning, execution, and report writing, this project should require more than twelve hours per participating student to be effectively executed.
