Cartography is an ancient human tool, used since the early days of civilization to understand, represent, and interact with the world around us. With the advent of modern technology, cartography has evolved and become an integrated discipline that covers a wide variety of topics, from the physical representation of the terrain to the visualization of socio-economic and environmental patterns. In this project, we will explore time and space through cartography.

The concepts of time and space are fundamental to understanding geography. The geographic space can be described as the place where all the phenomena we study in geography occur, whether natural or human. Time, on the other hand, is the dimension in which these events occur. Understanding time and space is essential to understanding how the world around us changes and evolves.

Representing time in cartographic space is a challenge that cartographers have faced for centuries. Through abstraction and symbolization, we are able to represent temporal aspects in cartography, creating maps that can help us understand geographical processes that occur over time.

Cartography: Time and Space is the basis for understanding the dynamics of our world. Each area of our planet has a unique history that can be told through maps. Understanding how maps are created and how to interpret them is fundamental to any geographical study.

The practical application of cartographic concepts extends from urban planning to weather forecasting. The ability to visualize geographic data in meaningful ways allows us to make informed decisions and improve our quality of life. In this sense, cartography is not just a set of technical skills, but also a powerful tool for critical thinking and problem-solving.

Practical Activity: Creating and Analyzing Temporal Maps

Project Objectives:

  1. Understand basic concepts of cartography, time, and space.

  4. Apply theoretical concepts in practice.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will form groups composed of 3 to 5 participants. The project will be developed over three weeks to allow students enough time to complete all proposed steps.

The activity consists of creating a temporal map of a specific geographic area, showing how it has changed over time. In addition, students will make a critical analysis of these changes.

The choice of the location to be mapped is free, it can be the neighborhood where they live, the city where the school is located, a region of the country, among other options.

Required Materials:

  1. Computer with internet access.
  2. Paper and pen for notes.
  3. Digital cartography programs, such as Google Earth or similar.

Step-by-Step for Activity Completion:

  1. Research: Conduct research to gather information about the chosen geographic area. Include historical, demographic, economic, and environmental data. Remember to record the sources of information and data collection methods.

  2. Planning: Organize the collected information chronologically and identify the main events or changes that have occurred in the area over time.

  3. Map Creation: Use cartography software to create the map of the geographic area. Represent the changes that have occurred over time using different layers or markers on the map.

  4. Analysis: Make a critical analysis of the changes that have occurred in the geographic area. Discuss the possible causes of these changes and their implications.

  5. Report: Write a detailed report that includes the introduction, methodology, results, and conclusions.

Report Development:

The final project report should be structured according to the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Describe the theme addressed in the project, explaining the relevance of cartography for understanding time and space. Contextualize the chosen geographic area for analysis.

  2. Development: Present the theory involved in the activity. Detail the methodology used to collect data, create the map, and analyze the information. Discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusions: Summarize the main points addressed in the report, highlighting the most significant findings and the lessons learned during the project.

  4. Bibliography: List the sources of information used in the project.

The elaboration of this report should be done jointly, respecting the diversity of ideas and opinions within the group. The final report, as well as the created map, will be the project submission.
