Function: Introduction

Contextualization

In the study of mathematics, there are concepts that stand out for their applicability and relevance in various areas of knowledge. Among these concepts, the Function is of utmost importance, being employed in numerous situations and contexts.

In its essence, a function is a relationship between sets that associates each element of a set (domain) with a single element in another set (codomain). Understanding the concept of function has become crucial in a world increasingly focused on data analysis and solving complex problems, which require logical and strategic reasoning skills.

The idea of function pervades our daily lives in ways that often go unnoticed. We can find functions in a cake recipe, in a GPS route, in the weather forecast, in banking operations, in tax calculations, in social media algorithms, among others.

In this project, you will be introduced to this concept in a practical and engaging way. A group challenge will be proposed that will allow you and your colleagues to understand, in a concrete way, the characteristics and applicability of mathematical functions.

To enrich the study of this concept, we recommend reading the book "Functions: An Introductory Approach", by Elon Lages Lima, available at any bookstore. In addition, we recommend the following online resources: videos from the Matemática Rio channel with Prof. Rafael Procopio and articles from the Brasil Escola website.

We count on the dedication and commitment of each one of you to plunge headlong into this fascinating and fundamental topic for all mathematics.

Practical Activity: "Unveiling Functions through Games"

Project Objective

The activity aims to introduce the concept of function, allowing students to understand what a function is, the conditions for its existence, and the main characteristics that define it through a playful and collaborative game.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will receive a set of cards, where each card represents a relationship between elements. The group's task is to identify which of these relationships satisfy the conditions to be classified as a function, using only the knowledge acquired on the subject.

Required Materials

For the activity, the following will be available:

  • Set of cards with ratios (available to be printed or as a digital resource);
  • Research material (books, internet access);
  • Paper and pen for notes.

Step-by-step detailed procedure to carry out the activity

  1. Each group will receive a set of 20 cards, where each card represents a relationship.
  2. Each group must classify each relationship as a function or non-function.
  3. To do this, the groups must research, discuss, and analyze the relationships, indicating the reasons that justify their classification.
  4. At the end of the activity, each group should prepare a presentation on their findings and conclusions.

Project Delivery

After the practical part of the project, each group must write a report. The document should be organized as follows:

1. Introduction: Students should contextualize the concept of function, its relevance, and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.

2. Development: The theory behind the concept of function should be detailed at this point. Here, students should explain the activity in detail, as well as present and discuss the results obtained.

3. Conclusions: Returning to the main points, the group should make explicit the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project. It is important to reflect on the experience as a whole and connect it to the initial objective.

4. Bibliography: The group should indicate the sources used to work on the project, whether books, web pages, videos, etc.

Remember, the process is as important as the final answer. The main objective of this project is to allow students to explore the concept of function and develop their collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills while having fun learning.
