Context
Galaxies are massive gigantic systems composed of stars, interstellar matter, gas, and dust united by gravity. They are complex structures with different components interacting with each other and with the surrounding environment. Some contain billions of stars, while others, like our own Milky Way, contain between 200 billion and 400 billion stars.
There are several types of galaxies, each with their own peculiarities in both shape and composition. Spiral galaxies have a spiral pattern of stars and gas around a core. Elliptical galaxies, on the other hand, have an oval shape and consist mainly of older stars, with little gas and dust. There are also irregular galaxies, which have atypical shapes due to gravitational interactions with other galaxies.
Galaxies are of fundamental importance in helping us understand the universe as they are in themselves a universe on a small scale. Studying them allows us to understand not only the formation and structure of the Universe, but also the fundamental laws of physics. Through the study of galaxies, we can better understand dark matter, dark energy, and the evolution of the universe.
Astronomy and astrophysics significantly contribute to our understanding of the world and have practical applications in our daily lives. Research in astronomy has led to the development of technologies such as GPS, which we use for navigation. Furthermore, astronomy also plays an important role in inspiring new generations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Students must elaborate a detailed presentation on a specific type of galaxy, considering its formation, distinct characteristics, life cycle, and what would be the impact of a human journey to that galaxy.
Detailed Project Description:
This team-based project activity will allow students to explore the science, physics, and mathematics behind galaxies. They will incorporate concepts of theoretical physics, astrophysics, and mathematics to create a human travel plan to the selected galaxy, also considering biological and social factors of such a journey.
Required Materials:
- Computer with Internet access for research.
- Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, or similar).
- Books and scientific articles for reference.
- Calculator.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:
Step 1: Formation of groups with 3 to 5 students.
Step 2: Each group must choose a type of galaxy (spiral, elliptical, irregular) for research and presentation.
Step 3: Research in-depth about the chosen type of galaxy, including concepts such as formation, life cycle, quantity and type of stars, possibility of life, among others.
Step 4: Develop a human travel plan for the selected galaxy, considering physical concepts such as distance, time, speed, gravity, required energy, among others. Additionally, the biological aspects (e.g., effects of space travel on the human body) and social aspects (how life will be, possible social problems) of the journey should be considered.
Step 5: Create a detailed slide presentation about the chosen galaxy and the travel plan. The presentation should be structured logically and clearly, covering all learned theoretical concepts.
Step 6: Present the work to the class and teacher. Each group member should present at least one part of the presentation.
Project Submission: Each group must submit the digital file of the presentation and a written report following the structure:
- Introduction: Contextualization of galaxies and the importance of the study. Description of the chosen galaxy type and the objective of the journey.
- Development: Detailed theoretical explanation about the galaxy and description of the proposed travel plan, with all calculations and estimates.
