Practical Activity
Activity Title: Elastic Power
Project Objective:
Understanding the concept of elastic potential energy and its practical application through the construction of a marshmallow launcher using a spoon and rubber bands.
Detailed Project Description:
Students, in groups of 3 to 5 people, will build a marshmallow launcher with the goal of hitting a target at a specified distance. This activity will help students understand the theory of elastic potential energy in a fun and practical way. Each group will be responsible for developing their own launcher, documenting the construction process, noting variations in the distance reached, and writing a final report.
Required Materials:
- Plastic spoon.
- Rubber bands.
- Marshmallows.
- Ruler or measuring tape.
- Target.
Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:
-
Launcher Construction: Attach the plastic spoon with the rubber bands to a fixed support. The pressure and tension that the rubber bands exert on the spoon is what will create the elastic potential energy to launch the marshmallows.
-
Launch Test: Perform some launch tests and adjust the rubber bands according to the distance you want to reach. Remember to note the amount of tension applied and the distance reached in each attempt.
-
Competition Between Teams: Each team will have a fixed number of attempts to hit the target with their launcher. The team that gets closest to the target will be the winner!
Project Deliverables:
At the end of the project, student groups must deliver:
-
Marshmallow Launcher: The artifact they built to perform the launches.
-
Activity Report: A written document containing:
-
Introduction: Description of the concept of elastic potential energy and its practical applications.
-
Development: Detailed explanation of the process of creating the marshmallow launcher. Additionally, they should present the theory involved in the experiment, the methodology used, and the results achieved in terms of distances reached and amount of elastic potential energy used.
-
Conclusions: Discussion of the results obtained, lessons learned during the project, and the relationship between the theory and practice of elastic potential energy.
-
Bibliography: List of information sources used for the project.
The report should be written clearly and concisely, demonstrating an understanding of the theory and practical application of elastic potential energy. The correlation between the tension applied to the launcher (elastic potential energy) and the distance reached by the marshmallows should be noted. Furthermore, the preparation of this report will help develop skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, and creativity.
Remember, the goal of this activity is to learn and have fun. Good luck!
