Kinematics: Oblique Motion Equation

Contextualization

Oblique motion is, essentially, the movement that an object performs when launched at an angle other than 90˚ in relation to the ground. It is called compound motion because its trajectory is the result of the composition of two movements: one horizontally (uniform rectilinear motion) and one vertically (uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion due to gravity). Therefore, to understand oblique motion and its components - velocity, time of flight, maximum range, and maximum height - a proper understanding of the equations of motion in physics is necessary.

The equations of motion are fundamental tools in physics because they allow us to relate variables such as displacement, velocity, acceleration, and time. In the case of oblique motion, we analyze the motion components separately and then bring them together to unveil how the object moves. This study is essential not only to understand how everyday objects, such as a soccer ball when kicked, move but also crucial in various specialized disciplines, such as aerospace engineering.

Now, you might be wondering: why study this topic? Well, oblique motion is everywhere, from a bird's flight to the trajectory of a field goal in a soccer match. Furthermore, it is a key concept to understand how satellites maintain a stable orbit or how engineers design spacecraft to reach specific targets in space.

Importance of the Topic

Studying oblique motion helps us understand everyday phenomena and design innovative technologies. It is essential in predicting how an object will move under certain conditions, allowing engineers and scientists to design everything from simple toys to complex spacecraft.

It is also an important topic in physics that connects concepts of kinematics and dynamics, offering students the opportunity to apply the theory learned in practice. By studying oblique motion, students can understand the connection between different aspects of physics and see how they come together to explain the world around us.

Practical Activity: "Water Cannon Project"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a deeper understanding of oblique motion. By building and experimenting with a water cannon, students will have the opportunity to directly observe how various factors affect oblique motion. Additionally, they will apply physics concepts to calculate and predict the behavior of the water jet.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students are tasked with designing and building a water cannon. They will launch water jets at specific angles and measure the distance reached. Then, they will use the equations of oblique motion to calculate and predict the jet's trajectory. The project should be completed in groups of 3 to 5 students and has an estimated working duration of up to four hours per student.

Required Materials

  • 2-liter plastic bottle
  • Bicycle air pump
  • Water spray nozzle with adjustable angles
  • Tape measure
  • Calculator
  • Stopwatch
  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Ruler

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Each group of students must design and build a water cannon using the provided materials. The plastic bottle should be fitted with the air pump and the spray nozzle.

  2. The group should choose three different angles (such as, for example, 30º, 45º, and 60º) and launch the water jet from the cannon at each of these angles. If possible, each launch should be repeated three times.

  3. For each launch, students must measure and record the flight time (using a stopwatch), the horizontal range (using a tape measure), and the maximum height reached (through calculations using the equations of motion).

  4. Students should then use the equations of oblique motion to calculate and predict the flight time, maximum range, and maximum height for each angle. They should compare these results with the collected experimental data.

  5. After collecting and analyzing all the data, each group should compile their results and conclusions into a report.

Project Delivery

After completing the practical activity, students should prepare a final report presenting their results. The report should be organized as follows:

  • Introduction: The student should contextualize the topic, explain its relevance and real-world application, and state the objective of this project.

  • Development: It should present the theory behind oblique motion, explain in detail the practical activity carried out, indicate the methodology applied, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

  • Conclusions: It should summarize the main points of the project, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.

  • Bibliography: Indicate all sources on which they relied to carry out the project, such as books, web pages, videos, among others.

Through this report, students will demonstrate not only their understanding of the concept of oblique motion but also their research, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
