We live in an era of intensified globalization, characterized by instant and eloquent communication and interdependence between nations. Three central concepts for understanding our globalized world are: contemporary societies, globalized world, and migratory flows.

The concept of contemporary societies refers to the complexity of current societies, marked by globalization, technology, multiculturalism, and pluralism. They challenge traditional distinctions between the local and the global, the public and the private, the real and the virtual.

The globalized world refers to the increasing interconnection and interdependence between different societies and cultures, driven by advances in communication and transportation technology, as well as by the liberalization of trade and investment. In globalization, national borders become increasingly permeable, affecting the economy, politics, culture, environment, and social relations.

Migratory flows refer to the movement of people from one place to another, whether voluntarily or forcibly. In the era of globalization, migratory flows are accelerating and diversifying, influenced by factors such as conflicts, natural disasters, the search for better life and work opportunities, among others.

Contextualization

The growing global interdependence has profound impacts on how we live our lives. It influences everything from the food we eat, the news we consume, the jobs we perform, to the products we buy. Not only are we increasingly connected to each other across borders, but our lives are increasingly shaped by events happening in distant locations.

Migratory flows, in particular, have a direct impact on contemporary societies. They bring cultural diversity, contribute to economic development, but also cause tensions and challenges. How societies deal with immigration and cultural diversity is a crucial issue in our globalized era.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Interactive Map of Migratory Flows

Project Objective:

The activity proposes the creation of an Interactive Map of global Migratory Flows. The objective is to encourage students to research and understand the dimension and complexity of migratory flows and their implications for contemporary societies and the globalized world.

Detailed Project Description:

The interactive map will consist of the countries of origin and destination of migrants, demonstrating the intensity of migratory flows. Each group should choose a continent and research the main migratory flows in it, highlighting the reasons (political, economic, environmental, etc.) behind these movements.

Each group should thoroughly research the reasons for these flows, the impacts on the countries of origin and destination, the migration policies adopted, the reactions of the local society, among other relevant aspects.

The Map should be presented on a large poster, where each group will pin colored cards representing the migratory flows, linking them with colored lines representing the migratory routes.

Necessary Materials:

1. Large poster
2. Cardboard paper of various colors
3. Colored pens
4. Pins or tape
5. Ruler or measuring tape
6. Computer with internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step:

1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students, each group will be responsible for a continent.

2. Each group should start by researching the main migratory flows in their continent. The research should consider the following questions: What are the main countries of origin and destination of migrants? What are the main reasons for migration? What is the impact of migration on the countries of origin and destination? What migration policies are in practice?

3. Based on their research, each group should create colored cards representing the countries involved in the migratory flows. Each card should contain the name of the country and a brief description of its role in the migratory flow.

4. Next, the groups should draw the migratory routes on the poster, using colored lines to connect the countries of origin and destination.

5. Each group should present their Interactive Map to the class, explaining the main conclusions of their research.

6. Finally, each group should write a detailed report of their research and the map creation process. The report should include the following topics:

   • Introduction: Provide context on the theme and explain the choice of continent and the project's objective.

   • Development: Detail the researched theory, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.

   • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.

   • Bibliography: List the sources used in the project.

This activity allows students to explore the complexity of the globalized world, while developing skills such as research, critical thinking, teamwork, and presentation.
