Contextualization

Human communication involves a series of skills and competencies that, when mobilized in an integrated way, enable the understanding and production of discourses in various contexts. In this sense, the study of the participants' competencies in communication becomes fundamental for understanding the dynamics involved in this process.

In this activity, we will explore the concepts of language, discourse, and participants' competencies, based on the study of different texts and their semiotics (verbal, visual, auditory, gestural). Understanding these elements is crucial for active and critical participation in society.

The Portuguese language, within the Portuguese discipline, offers a wide range of possibilities for interpreting and producing discourses. However, it is not enough to know just the grammatical rules and the alphabet. To communicate effectively, it is necessary to understand the context, know the audience, master the subject, and many other competencies. This is where the importance of studying language and participants' competencies comes in.

Currently, in an increasingly connected and globalized world, knowing how to communicate is essential. And more than that, it is necessary to know how to interpret the information received. In this sense, studying the participants' competencies in communication is to better understand how human relationships work, whether they are personal, social, or professional.

We suggest the following materials for further study and theoretical foundation:

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Competencies in Communication: A Collaborative Analysis'

Objective:

Through the analysis and interpretation of different texts - visual, verbal, auditory, and gestural - student groups should recognize and explore the competencies required of participants in a communicative act.

Activity Description:

Students will divide into groups of 3 to 5 and choose a text (it can be an opinion article, a television report, a podcast, a political speech, a meme, a commercial, among other options) to be the basis of their analysis.

Necessary Materials:

• Internet access for research and text selection.
• Materials for the preparation of the report - paper, pens, computer for typing, among others.

Step by Step:

1. Group Formation and Text Selection: Students must organize into groups and choose the text that will be the object of their analysis. It is important that everyone in the group agrees on the choice.

2. Reading and Analysis of the Text: At this stage, students must read and discuss the chosen text, identifying the competencies that were mobilized in the communicative act. Here, they should pay attention to aspects such as the context of the text, the participants involved, the intentions of the communication, among others.

3. Research: Students should research more about the theme of the text, as well as the concepts of language, discourse, and participants' competencies.

4. Report Preparation: Students must produce a written report explaining the choice of text, the analysis carried out, and the conclusions reached. The report should contain the following topics:

• Introduction: The student must contextualize the project's theme, the relevance of studying the participants' competencies, and the work's objective.
• Development: This is the most extensive part of the report and should contain the theory behind the studied themes (language, discourse, participants' competencies), the description of the activity carried out, the methodology used, and the presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
• Conclusion: Recap of the main points of the work, explanation of the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
• Bibliography: Indication of the sources consulted for the project's execution.

5. Presentation of the Work: Each group must present their work to the class, sharing their findings and conclusions. This stage also involves participants' competencies in communication, such as expressing oneself clearly and objectively, managing the available time for the presentation, answering questions, among others.

Project Deliverables:

• Written Report: The document must be delivered within the stipulated deadline (one month) and must follow the structure indicated above (Introduction, Development, Conclusion, Bibliography).

• Presentation: Groups must present their analyses and discussions clearly and concisely, demonstrating an understanding of the theme and the ability to communicate effectively.
