Textual Types: Grammatical

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

Language is one of the most powerful tools we have to express our thoughts, feelings, and opinions. It is the basis of human communication, used in all aspects of our lives. Within this extensive and complex universe, textual types and their grammars are presented as fundamental elements.

Textual types are defined based on the common characteristics that a set of texts presents. These characteristics can be related to the structure, content, or even the purpose of the text. The main textual types are: narrative, descriptive, expository, argumentative, and injunctive.

Grammar, in turn, is the set of rules that govern the use of a language, determining how words should be combined to form coherent sentences. Each textual type, then, has its specific grammar, that is, a set of rules that guide the production and interpretation of each type of text.

Importance of Textual Types and their Grammars

Understanding textual types and their grammars is essential for the comprehension and production of effective texts. In a world increasingly centered on communication, this skill becomes even more relevant.

Whether in a work email, a blog post, a college entrance essay, or a simple social media post, choosing the appropriate textual type and observing its grammar are fundamental. Moreover, being able to differentiate textual types helps us better interpret texts and speeches, facilitating our understanding of the world around us.

Activity

Activity Title: "Diversity and Dynamism: Creating Texts in Different Textual Types"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students to investigate, learn, and experiment with different textual types and their grammars. In the end, students should be able to identify, understand, and produce different types of texts effectively.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for exploring two different textual types - one textual type will be assigned by the teacher and the other will be freely chosen by the group.

For each textual type, the group will:

  1. Research about the textual type and its grammatical rules.
  2. Create an original text in that format.
  3. Analyze a text provided by the teacher, identifying the characteristics corresponding to the textual type.
  4. Prepare a mini-seminar to present their findings and texts to the class.

The activity should be developed over a month, with an estimated total duration of 5 to 10 hours of work per student.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Materials for recording: notebook or digital document
  • Presentation applications (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Assignment of Textual Type: The teacher will assign a textual type to each group, and the group will choose the second one.

  3. Research: Groups will research the characteristics and grammatical rules of each textual type.

  4. Text Creation: Each group will produce an original text for each textual type.

  5. Text Analysis: Groups will receive texts from the teacher and must identify the characteristics corresponding to the textual type.

  6. Seminar Preparation: Groups will prepare a presentation to share their findings with the class.

  7. Presentation: Each group will present their mini-seminar to the class.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit a written report in the format of:

  1. Introduction: Contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, and the objective of this project.
  2. Development: A section for each textual type, explaining the theory, detailing the text creation process, the analysis of the teacher's text, and the methodology used. Present and discuss the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Recap the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report must be submitted within a week after the seminar presentation. In this document, students must demonstrate a deep understanding of the two textual types they explored, showing their ability to analyze, create, and discuss texts in these formats.
