Medieval Gothic Art

Practical Activity: "Recreating Gothic Art"

Project Objective

The objective is for students to research, analyze, and recreate a piece of Gothic art, whether it be in architecture, painting, sculpture, or illuminated manuscript. Students will learn to look closely at art, analyze its form and content, and interpret its symbolism.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will have one month to develop the project. Each group member should dedicate between five and ten hours to the project, including time for research, discussion, planning, practical creation, and writing.

The activity will be divided into three stages:

  1. Research and Analysis: Each group will choose a piece of Gothic art to study. They should research the piece, including its historical context, creation technique, symbolism, and importance to Gothic art. The analysis should include a detailed description of the piece, highlighting its main formal elements.

  2. Recreating the Piece: Based on the research and analysis done, the groups will attempt to recreate the chosen piece. They can use any materials they choose, but should try to be as faithful as possible to the original piece.

  3. Writing: Finally, the groups should prepare a report on the project. The report should include: Introduction, where they contextualize the importance of Gothic art and present the chosen piece; Development, where they detail the research, analysis, and recreation process of the piece; Conclusions, where they highlight what they learned during the project and their impressions of Gothic art; and Bibliography, where they list all sources used for research.

Necessary Materials

The materials for recreating the piece will depend on the piece chosen by the students. They may include paper, pencils, paints, clay, and other art materials. Additionally, a computer and internet access will be necessary for research.

Detailed Activity Steps

  1. Group Formation: Students will form groups of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Choosing the Piece: Each group will choose a piece of Gothic art to research and recreate.

  3. Research and Analysis: The groups will conduct a detailed research on the chosen piece and analyze it in depth.

  4. Recreating the Piece: The groups will recreate the piece using the material they find most suitable.

  5. Final Report: The groups will write a detailed report on the project, including all the topics described above: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

The project will be delivered in two parts: the physical recreation of the piece of art and the written report. The recreation of the piece of art should be presented in the classroom to all students and teachers. The report should be submitted in printed format and contain details of the entire creation process, from the research and analysis of the piece to the recreation and final conclusions. Additionally, the bibliography used must be properly formatted and presented at the end of the document.
