Chemistry is a fascinating science that seeks to reveal the mysteries behind natural phenomena. Among its various branches of study, Physical Chemistry explores the fundamental principles that describe the behavior of matter. Within this context, we present the study of colligative properties, a substantial and applicable aspect of chemistry that has significant implications in various industries and everyday processes.

Colligative properties are characteristics that depend exclusively on the number of solute particles dispersed in a solvent, and not on the nature of these particles. The four main colligative properties are: decrease in vapor pressure, elevation of boiling point, lowering of freezing point, and osmotic pressure. These topics will be the focus of our project, and through it, we hope you become familiar with colligative properties and their applications.

Importance and Applications

The relevance of studying colligative properties transcends the academic environment, as these concepts are applied in various areas. In the food industry, for example, freezing and food preservation are processes that involve lowering of the freezing point. Another notable application is in medicine, where osmotic pressure is considered for the intravenous administration of medications and fluids.

Furthermore, knowledge about colligative properties has direct implications in our daily lives. Did you know that adding salt to icy roads, a common process in cold countries, is an example of lowering the freezing point? The salt reduces the freezing point of water, preventing it from turning into ice and making the roads slippery.

Practical Activity: The Magic of Colligative Properties

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to apply and understand colligative properties through simple and low-cost experiments, using materials that can be easily found.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, where they will carry out practical experiments to observe and analyze each of the four colligative properties: decrease in vapor pressure, elevation of boiling point, lowering of freezing point, and osmotic pressure. After completing the experiments, the students will prepare a report explaining the theory behind colligative properties, describing in detail the experiments conducted, and discussing their results.

Required Materials

  • Distilled water
  • Common salt (NaCl)
  • Sugar
  • Thermometer
  • Glass jars (or cups)
  • Calorimeter (or small pot)
  • Balloons (or rubber gloves)
  • Jars with lids
  • Scale
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Freezer
  • Oven

Project Step-by-Step

We will carry out four experiments to observe each of the colligative properties. Each experiment must be carefully documented, observing the measurements and changes that occur.

  1. Vapor pressure: Place distilled water and salt water (6g for every 100g of water) in two separate jars, cover and leave in a closed environment. Observe and record the amount of water that evaporates.

  2. Boiling point elevation: Make a solution of water and salt (6g for every 100g of water) and measure the temperature of the water at different times until it boils. Compare this with the boiling point of pure water.

  3. Freezing point depression: Mix water and salt (6g for every 100g of water), place the mixture in a jar with a lid, insert a popsicle stick into the mixture, and place it in the freezer. Compare the freezing time with that of pure water.

  4. Osmotic pressure: Place distilled water on one side of a balloon and a solution of water and sugar on the other. Tie it so that the sides do not mix. Let it rest and observe and record the change in the amount of water from one side to the other.

Note: All these experiments must be carried out under the supervision of a teacher or an adult.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit a report that will contain four main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  • In the Introduction section, students must contextualize the theme, explain the relevance of colligative properties in daily life, and define the project's objective.

  • In the Development section, students must explain the theory behind colligative properties, describe in detail the experiments conducted, the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.

  • In the Conclusions section, students must summarize the main points addressed, reflect on the acquired learnings, and delve into the impressions and conclusions drawn from the project.

  • In the Bibliography section, students must list all sources of information used, whether books, web pages, videos, etc.

This project will allow students to develop not only their understanding of colligative properties but also important skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, etc.
