Contextualization

The study of the sphere and its volume is one of the central topics in geometry, especially in spatial geometry. The sphere is a perfectly symmetrical three-dimensional object, present in various aspects of nature and human construction. It is formed when all points on its surface are equidistant from a central point.

Nature offers us a multitude of examples of spheres, such as planets, water droplets, fruits like oranges and peaches, and even the shape of human eyes. In the industry, we find spheres in sports balls, globes, light bulbs, and numerous other products.

Motivation and Application

In addition to being ubiquitous in nature, the concept of the sphere and its volume plays a fundamental role in various disciplines such as physics, engineering, architecture, and design. Volume calculation is essential to determine the amount of material needed to build or fill a spherical object.

For example, engineers need to calculate the volume of spheres to design spherical storage tanks, which are often used to store gas. They also need this calculation when designing spherical vehicles, such as submarines or spacecraft. Architects and designers, in turn, use the concept of sphere volume when creating decorative objects or architectural structures.

Mastery of this topic, therefore, not only provides students with valuable mathematical knowledge but also a practical skill they can apply in their future careers.

Activity Title: "Bubble Project: Analyzing Sphere Volumes"

Objective

To understand the concept of sphere volume through a practical and playful approach, involving material manipulation, observation, experimentation, measurement, calculation, and report writing. Additionally, to encourage teamwork, effective communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Detailed Project Description

This is a project in which students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people and will be tasked with studying the sphere by creating soap bubbles and calculating their volumes. Furthermore, they will be encouraged to explore how soap bubbles can help visualize volume and surface concepts. This project will require an estimated total of fifteen hours of work for each participating student.

Required Materials

  1. Water
  2. Liquid detergent
  3. Glycerin (optional)
  4. Straws
  5. Strings
  6. Ruler
  7. Calculator
  8. Camera or smartphone for taking photographs
  9. A4 paper sheets

Step by Step

  1. Preparation Phase: Groups should start the project by conducting research and discussions on the concept of the sphere, calculating the volume of a sphere, and its real-world correlation.

  2. Experimentation: Each group should prepare a soap bubble solution by mixing water, detergent, and glycerin in appropriate proportions. Then, students should create soap bubbles using straws and strings. They should take photos of the soap bubbles and, if possible, measure their diameters through the photographs.

  3. Volume Calculation: Using the sphere volume formula (4/3πr³), and assuming the soap bubbles as perfect spheres, students should calculate the volume of the created bubbles.

  4. Analysis and Discussion: Groups should discuss the difficulties encountered and share their observations and conclusions. They should correlate theoretical concepts with practical observations and reflect on the importance of accuracy in measurements and calculations.

  5. Report Writing: The final phase of the project will consist of preparing a report in the form of a written document, where students should elaborate on the following topics:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the sphere and its volume, relevance and application in the real world, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Explanation of the theory behind sphere volume, detailing the practical activity performed, presenting the methodology used, and the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Recap of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions drawn from the project.
    • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the project.

Project Deliverables

At the end of this project, groups must deliver the following items:

  1. Soap Bubble Photographs: The photos should be presented in a digital folder, properly identified and captioned.

  2. Data Table and Calculations: Students should present a table with the approximate diameter of the soap bubbles and their respective calculated volumes.

  3. Written Report: The report writing should follow the structure presented in the step-by-step guide, detailing the group's experimentation process and learning. The report should include a self-assessment section, where group members evaluate their participation and collaboration during the project.

Remember to be creative, careful, and detailed in presenting your work. This is a collaborative project that requires engagement and dedication from all group members.
