Conditional Probability

Contextualization

The wonderful world of probability is all around us, permeating various aspects of everyday life. From financial decisions to game strategies and weather forecasts, probability is a powerful tool for understanding, predicting, and making decisions about the uncertain world around us. In particular, conditional probability plays an essential role in many of these aspects.

Conditional probability is the probability of an event happening, given that some other events have already occurred. For example, the chance of winning the lottery is very low, but if you know you won, your probability of becoming a millionaire is extremely high. This is a simple and direct example, but conditional probability is much more than that and has extensive applications in vast and varied fields.

Conditional probability is a central concept in the theory of probability and statistics and is fundamental to a variety of disciplines, including computer science, engineering, medicine, psychology, economics, among others. For example, in medicine, conditional probability is used to determine the effectiveness of a treatment or medication based on the results of patients who received it. In economics, it can be used to determine the probability of an economic event occurring based on certain economic indicators.

In this project, we will take a deep dive into the fascinating theory of conditional probability and explore its applications. We intend to demonstrate how deep and broad this field is, as well as its relevance in our daily lives.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Conditional Probability Game - Understanding Reality through Numbers"

Project Objective

The project's objective is to apply the concept of conditional probability in an interactive and playful environment to better understand its applications and nuances.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will create a board game that involves the concept of conditional probability. The games should be designed to test and enhance students' understanding of conditional probability, making learning fun, interactive, and engaging.

Throughout the project, students will:

  • Discuss and understand the theory of conditional probability.
  • Apply the theory in a practical scenario.
  • Present the results of their game and the design process.

Required Materials

For the completion of this project, the following materials will be needed:

  • Paper and pencils for drawing and calculations.
  • Online articles/videos/books on conditional probability.
  • Materials for building the board game (cardboard, markers, beads or game pieces, dice, etc).

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Each group should start by researching the concept of conditional probability. The research should be done from different sources, such as books, videos, online tutorials, etc. The groups should understand the theoretical concept and its real-life application.

  2. Based on the acquired knowledge, each group should develop a concept for their board game. The game should be designed in a way that players need to use conditional probability to advance in it.

  3. After conceiving the game idea, students should design the board, rules, and game elements. They should ensure that the game is interactive and fun, while providing a practical application of conditional probability.

  4. Once the game is designed, they should test it among themselves and make necessary adjustments.

  5. Finally, each group should write a report on the project. The report should include an introduction to the concept of conditional probability, a summary of the activities carried out, a description of the game created, the challenges faced during the game creation, the solutions found, and the conclusions drawn from the project. The report should be concluded with the bibliography used.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group should deliver:

  1. The board of the created game.

  2. The game rules.

  3. A detailed and well-written report of the project:

    • Introduction: The concept of conditional probability, its importance and real-life application, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Step-by-step description of the project, game explanation, the different stages of its creation, and the results obtained during the game test.
    • Conclusions: Return to the main points of the project, the learnings obtained, the challenges faced and overcome, the solutions found, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
    • Bibliography: Indication of the sources on which the group relied to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
