Probability is a branch of mathematics that studies the likelihood of a particular event occurring within a set of possible events. It is present in various situations in our daily lives and is crucial in many fields of study and work, such as Statistics, Engineering, Physics, and Economics. The key concept that we will explore in this project is the properties of probability, which give us tools to analyze scenarios through the lens of uncertainty.

The properties of probability include fundamental principles, such as the idea that the probability of an event is always a number between 0 and 1, that the probability of an impossible event is 0, and that the probability of a certain event is 1. Another important property is that the sum of the probabilities of all possible events is always equal to 1. These concepts are the basis for building probabilistic models and solving probability problems.

Understanding these properties is essential for comprehending more complex probabilities and developing strategies to approach real-world problems. For example, a production engineer can use them to predict failures in a production line, an economist can apply them to analyze financial risks, and a data scientist can employ them to create predictive algorithms.

Probability is everywhere. When you decide whether to take an umbrella based on the weather forecast, when a doctor decides the probability of a patient having a disease based on their symptoms, or even when a company decides whether an investment is worth it based on the probability of success - all of these decisions involve the use of probability. Understanding its properties allows you to analyze and make more informed decisions in various situations.

Objectives of the project

The purpose of this activity is to understand and apply the properties of probability in a fun and collaborative way. Additionally, the project aims to develop skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and data-driven decision-making.

Detailed description of the project

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will receive a deck of cards and will be challenged to create different games that involve applying the properties of probability.

The games should be designed in such a way that the winners are determined by the probability of events, not just by chance. That is, the rules should be defined based on probability calculations so that players who understand the properties of probability better have an advantage.

Students will be encouraged to utilize different properties of probability in each of the games. For example, one game could highlight the property that the sum of the probabilities of all possible events is equal to 1, while another could explore the idea that the probability of an impossible event is 0.

Development: Presentation of the theory of probability properties, detailed explanation of the games created and how probability is applied in them, Discussion about the methodology used (how the group divided itself to carry out the project, how the game creation and testing processes took place), and presentation and discussion of the results (how they performed in the games, which strategies were more effective, if there were any surprises regarding the probability predictions).

  3. Conclusion: Recap of the main points of the report, highlighting the lessons learned, the difficulties faced, and the conclusions about the application of the properties of probability in the games.

  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources consulted by the group for the development of the project.

Students should strive to make the report clear, well-structured, and reflective, showing the connection between the theory of probability properties and their practical application in the games created.
