Contextualization

Energy production is one of the fundamental activities for the development of a society. It is necessary for various activities we do on a daily basis such as turning on the lights at home, charging our cell phones, fueling our cars, and even for the machines in industries to function. But have you ever stopped to think about how this energy is generated?

There are several forms of energy generation, each with its advantages and disadvantages. The main forms include hydroelectric, thermal, nuclear, wind, solar, among others. To better understand each of them, we need to delve a little into Physics.

Physics is a science that allows us to understand the world around us. It explains how and why things happen. In the case of energy generation, Physics can help us understand how we can transform different types of resources into useful energy.

Introduction

Energy can be defined as the capacity to do work. The law of conservation of energy, a fundamental concept of Physics, states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but only transformed from one form to another.

Energy generation involves the transformation of the energy contained in a natural resource (such as water, wind, sun, fossil fuels, or atoms) into a form that we can use (usually in the form of electricity). Each form of energy generation involves a different set of energy transformations and, therefore, has different environmental characteristics and impacts.

Throughout this project, you will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge about these forms of energy generation, exploring the physical concepts involved in each of them and analyzing the technological, economic, and environmental aspects related.

Practical Activity: 'Energy in Focus'

Project Objective

Investigate the different ways of generating energy, their pros and cons, based on technical, economic, and environmental criteria, and present your findings in an educational and informative presentation.

Detailed Project Description

Groups should research three distinct forms of energy production: hydroelectric energy, solar energy, and wind energy. Each group should prepare a detailed presentation, analyzing and comparing these three forms of energy generation, considering factors such as production efficiency, costs, environmental and socio-economic impacts.

As a complementary task, each group should build a simple model that demonstrates the basic operating principle of one of the forms of energy: hydroelectric, solar, or wind.

Required Materials

Research materials: internet access, books, scientific magazines, academic articles

Materials for model construction: depends on the type of model to be built, but may include recycled materials, cardboard, cardstock, adhesive tape, among others.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Groups choose one of the three forms of energy generation for model construction.
  3. Group research and discussion on the three types of energy.
  4. Preparation of the presentation, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each form of energy.
  5. Construction of the model representing the basic operating principle of the chosen form of energy.
  6. Preparation and rehearsal of the presentation, which should be approximately 15-20 minutes.
  7. Presentation of the work to the class.
  8. Writing the project report and its conclusions.

Project Deliverables

The deliverables for this project include:

  1. An oral presentation, including slides or posters, and the functional model.

  2. A final report, which should follow the following format:

    1. Introduction: In this section, students should contextualize the importance of energy for society, the role of different forms of energy generation, and the relevance of the project.

    2. Development: Here, students should explain how each of the three forms of energy generation investigated works. They should describe in detail the activity carried out, detailing the research process, the preparation of the presentation, and the construction of the model. A discussion of the results obtained should be included.

    3. Conclusion: In this part, students should revisit the main points addressed in the presentation, highlight what they learned from the project about the forms of energy generation, and make a critical reflection on the pros and cons of each, considering technical, economic, and environmental aspects.

    4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used in the project.

Students should strive to present a clear, well-organized work that demonstrates a good understanding of the topic and a well-founded critical analysis.

Evaluation will be based on the quality of the research conducted, the presentation, the accuracy and creativity of the model built, and the quality of the final report.
