Expansion: Liquids in Containers

Contextualization

Physics is a fascinating discipline that aims to describe the world around us. One of the fundamental topics to understand this world is the expansion of liquids in containers, a phenomenon that is an essential part of our daily experience, but that we rarely stop to consider in detail.

First, we need to understand what expansion is. Basically, expansion is the increase in the volume of a body caused by an increase in its temperature. This occurs because the atoms and molecules that make up this body move more and, in general, occupy a larger space as the temperature increases. In the case of a liquid in a container, we need to consider the expansion of both the liquid and the container.

However, as a general rule, liquids expand more than solids for the same increase in temperature. This is due to the fact that the intermolecular forces in liquids are generally weaker than in solids, allowing the atoms and molecules in liquids to have more freedom to move and occupy a larger volume.

Expansion in everyday life

Now, you may be wondering: why is this important? How can we see expansion in our daily lives? Well, there are several answers to this question. From mercury thermometers, where the expansion of mercury transmits the temperature of the environment, to the industry, where knowledge of how liquids expand is crucial for the design of refrigeration systems or energy production. Expansion is a key concept in the world around us, and understanding this phenomenon is important for our mastery over technology and nature.

Another practical example of the expansion of liquids is explaining why we should not completely fill a bottle before freezing it. When freezing, water expands and increases its volume, which can cause the bottle to burst.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Expansion of Liquid in the Container!

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is for students to understand and experience the expansion of liquids in containers through a playful and collaborative activity. They should also be able to relate the concept of expansion to everyday situations, as well as develop their research, analysis, and communication skills.

Necessary Materials

  1. Various glass or plastic containers of different sizes and shapes.
  2. Thermometers.
  3. Various liquids (water, oil, alcohol, etc).
  4. Scale.
  5. Stove or equipment to heat the liquids.
  6. Tape measure.
  7. Paper and pen for notes.
  8. Stopwatch.
  9. Protective gloves.

Detailed Project Description

The objective of the experiment is to analyze how different liquids expand in different containers when heated. For this, the project will be divided into several stages.

Groups: The work will be carried out by teams of 3 to 5 students, with an estimated duration of 5 to 10 hours of work per student.

Detailed Project Step by Step

1. Preparation:

  • Each group must gather and prepare all necessary materials.

2. Planning:

  • All initial measurements of the containers and liquids must be recorded.

3. Execution:

  • Start the experiment with the liquids at room temperature.
  • Measure and record the initial temperature of the liquids.
  • Gradually heat the liquid, monitoring and recording the temperature with the thermometer.
  • Observe and record the volumes of the liquids as they are heated.
  • Stop heating once the liquid starts to reach the boiling point.
  • Let the liquids cool down and observe what happens.

4. Data Analysis:

  • Analyze the results obtained, relating them to the theory of expansion.

5. Final Report:

  • Each team must prepare a report containing:
    • Introduction: Contextualizing the theme and explaining the relevance and applicability in the real world.
    • Development: Describing the theory, the activity, the methodology, and presenting the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Summarizing the main points and explaining the lessons learned.
    • Bibliography: Indicating the sources of information used.

The report must be submitted within one month after the start of the project.

Project Deliverables

The project will be delivered through a written report. In this report, the group must document the entire process of the practical activity, from planning to execution and analysis of the results.

The report must also present an interpretation of the results obtained in light of the theory of expansion and discuss the relevance of this theory to the real world. Finally, the report should provide a critical analysis of what worked, what did not work, and what could be done differently in future similar experiments.

Students will have to give an oral presentation, where they will present their reports to the class, explaining the development of the project and its results.
