Contextualization
Organic series, the central topic of this project, are fundamentally important for the advancement of chemistry and have various practical applications. By studying them, we will better understand the functioning of organic compounds that we encounter in our daily lives, such as fuels, plastics, and even the foods we consume!
In theoretical terms, an organic series is a set of compounds that have the same chemical function and the same difference in molar mass between their consecutive components. They are mainly divided into three categories: homologous, isologous, and heterologous. Homologous series are composed of compounds that have the same chemical function, such as alcohols, carboxylic acids, etc. Isologous series are composed of compounds with different chemical functions but the same number of carbon atoms. Heterologous series are formed by compounds with different chemical functions and the same number of hydrogen atoms.
Importance of organic series and their applications
Organic series are extremely important for chemistry because through them we can predict the physical and chemical properties of compounds, such as boiling point and solubility. Moreover, they are used as a reference in various industrial processes, from the production of medicines to the manufacturing of plastics and fuels.
In the energy sector, for example, alkanes are used, a group of hydrocarbons that are part of the homologous series of paraffins, which are used in the production of gasoline and natural gas. In the food sector, the homologous series of carboxylic acids is used in the production of vinegar, as it is composed of compounds like acetic acid. In the pharmaceutical industry, some drugs are also based on organic series, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are part of the homologous series of carboxylic acids.

Project Objective

Project Description
The student groups will have to research different organic series, identifying their compounds, properties, and practical uses in different industrial sectors. An important part of the project will be the creation of a mini-catalog containing each series and their respective compounds, physicochemical properties, and applications.

Students should indicate the sources used during the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
The report and the mini-catalog are complementary, where one describes in detail the work carried out, while the other is a concrete product of this work. These two documents, together, will serve to assess students' understanding of organic series, as well as their research, collaboration, and communication skills.
