Contextualization

Climate is a global phenomenon that affects all aspects of life on Earth. Understanding and studying it are fundamental to understanding how the world works and how human activities are influencing and being influenced by it. Climate is influenced by a variety of factors, including geography, topography, vegetation, ocean currents, and human activities.

The elements of climate, such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, winds, and precipitation, are all interconnected and influence the weather patterns we experience. These elements vary from place to place and from time to time, forming the basis for classifying the different types of climate existing on the planet.

Climate change, resulting from increased human activities, has led to significant modifications in the elements of climate. Understanding these elements and how they interact is essential to predicting and mitigating the impacts of climate change, such as floods, droughts, severe storms, and rising sea levels.

Understanding these elements is valuable not only for geography but also for a variety of other disciplines and careers, such as agriculture, meteorology, urban planning, and environmental management. Understanding the complexities of climate and its elements is crucial for building a sustainable future.

Practical Activity: "Climate Agents"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students to understand the main elements that influence the climate of a location and the relationship between them. Students will simulate the climate variations of different regions around the globe, providing a practical and applied understanding of the theoretical concepts studied.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for choosing a region of the planet, which can be a city, a state, a country, or even a continent, and studying the climatic elements present in that region. Then, students should research, collect, and analyze relevant data, such as average temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation index, and precipitation. Subsequently, students should represent this information through maps, graphs, or tables using different textual genres and digital technologies.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research;
  • Computer or tablet for editing and presentation;
  • Materials to create graphs, tables, or maps, such as paper, colored pencils, ruler, among others (optional, if they prefer the analog mode);

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Group Formation - Each group should consist of three to five students.

  2. Region Selection - The group should choose a region of the planet to analyze.

  3. Research - The group should research the climatic elements of the chosen region.

  4. Data Collection - Students should collect data, mainly on average temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation.

  5. Data Analysis - With the collected data, students should analyze and understand the relationships between the climatic elements.

  6. Data Representation - Students should represent their findings using graphs, tables, or maps.

  7. Report Writing - Students must prepare a detailed report on the study conducted.

Project Deliverables

The project must be delivered in two parts: the representation of the collected data (graphs, tables, maps, etc.) and the written report.

The written report should follow the suggested format and contain the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Students should contextualize the chosen region, the relevance of the climatic elements in that region, and the study objectives.
  2. Development: It should contain the theory on the main elements of climate, the detailed activity, the methodology used for data collection and analysis, and the discussion of the results obtained.
  3. Conclusions: Recap of the main points of the work, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn about the project.
  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to research and develop the project.

Students should learn to use graphic and digital resources to represent information in a meaningful and critical way, work in teams, manage time, solve problems, and develop critical thinking.
