Spanish Colonization: Review

Context

Spanish Colonization in America is a fundamental part of human history. This period is characterized by the exploration and colonization of the New World by the Spanish after Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1492, culminating in the independence of most colonial territories in the early 19th century.

During this period, the Spanish implemented new forms of administration, economy, and religion in vast territories inhabited by diverse cultures and indigenous peoples, which profoundly impacted these societies, causing profound political, cultural, and socio-economic changes that still resonate today.

Spanish colonization was a complex and multifactorial phenomenon that involved a series of interconnected processes, such as military conquest, religious conversion, economic exploitation, and cultural transmission. The advent of Spanish colonization brought with it a new political and social order, marked by a rigidly structured system of organization and control.

Importance

Understanding this historical moment is vital to comprehend the complex power relations, conflicts, and cultural convergences that unfolded during this process and left an indelible impact on the Americas. The effects of this colonization were also felt in Spain and worldwide, reshaping global political, economic, and cultural relations.

Studying this theme provides a critical and in-depth look at topics such as imperialism, cultural conflicts, migrations, violence, and resistance, helping us to better understand the current world with its socio-cultural and political imbalances and tensions.

Practical Activity - Board Game 'The Path to Conquest'

Project Objective

The activity proposes the creation of a board game that represents the process of Spanish colonization in America. Students should, in a playful way, recreate the challenges, conflicts, and dilemmas faced during this period, highlighting the colonizing dynamics and the resistances encountered.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 members should research the process of Spanish colonization, focusing on topics such as the journey of the colonizers, the indigenous civilizations encountered, and the conflicts arising from colonization. With the acquired knowledge, students should create a board game that represents this process, in a project that should last from five to ten hours per student.

Required Materials

For the activity, the following materials will be needed:

  • Cardboards, cards, or cardboard for making the board
  • Colored pencils, markers, highlighters
  • Pieces to represent the players (can be small objects, pieces from other games, etc.)
  • Dice or some other luck/chance mechanism

Step by Step

  1. Research: Conduct a detailed research on Spanish colonization in America. Focus on aspects such as the colonizers' journey, the encountered peoples, and the challenges faced. Use the resources recommended in the project's context.

  2. Game Concept: Based on the research, define the game rules. The game should contain elements that represent the colonizers' journey (natural challenges, indigenous resistance, etc.), the exploration of lands and extraction of resources, as well as the founding of colonies.

  3. Board Creation: Make the game board, where each space can represent a stage or challenge of colonization. It can be a linear progression or a map of America to be explored.

  4. Game Rules: Define the game rules. How to win, lose, what challenges need to be overcome, etc.

  5. Game Testing: Play the game several times to test if the rules work and if it is interesting and challenging.

  6. Final Adjustments: Make final adjustments to the game, correcting any issues found during testing.

Deliverables

After completing the practical project, each group should write a document detailing the game creation process. This document should be structured into Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography, and should detail the step-by-step creation of the game, what was learned about Spanish colonization during the process, the challenges and how they were overcome, and the main learnings obtained during the project.

The introduction should contextualize the theme and the project's objective, while the development should detail the game creation process, explaining the rules and how they represent Spanish colonization. The conclusion should summarize the main points and explain the experience gained and the conclusions drawn from the project. The bibliography should include all sources used during the research.
