Enlightenment: Review

Contextualization

The Enlightenment was a time of revolution in the way we think and see the world. It was a cultural and philosophical movement that paved the way for major changes in Western societies during the 17th and 18th centuries, challenging entrenched ideas and promoting logical questioning and the pursuit of knowledge. It is essential to understand this period, as much of who we are today, how we think, and how we organize society is due to influences from this important historical moment.

The key concepts that will guide our exploration of the Enlightenment theme include:

  • Rationality and empiricism as tools for understanding the world;
  • Questioning established authorities and dogmas;
  • The notion of universal human rights;
  • The idea of progress and human development;
  • The social contract and the idea of nation.

Importance of the Enlightenment

The importance of the Enlightenment is undeniable. During this time, ideals of freedom, equality, and fraternity prevailed, fueling a global wave of revolutions and reforms. These Enlightenment principles continue to influence our political, educational, and social systems to this day. For example, our modern notion of democracy and human rights has its roots in Enlightenment philosophy.

Moreover, it is in the Enlightenment that we find the beginning of criticism of colonization and slavery, as well as the emergence of feminist movements. In economic terms, we observe the defense of free trade and competition, ideas that form the basis of the capitalist economic system. In the fields of science and technology, the Enlightenment was responsible for the valorization of the scientific method and empiricism, stimulating unprecedented advances.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Enlightenment 2 - The Illumination of Our Time"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore the impact of the Enlightenment on our current society, through the analysis of the four main areas: politics, economy, society, and science. Students should use the lens of the Enlightenment to analyze and evaluate contemporary problems, applying theoretical concepts and acquired skills to propose enlightened solutions.

Detailed Project Description:

Working in groups of 3 to 5 students, each group will be responsible for choosing a contemporary topic within one of the four areas (politics, economy, society, and science). Through intensive research, they will need to understand the origin of this topic, its current state, and its potential future impact. Subsequently, they will develop a multimedia presentation and a detailed report on their findings and conclusions.

Required Materials:

  • Computer with internet access.
  • Presentation software (PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides, etc.).
  • Research materials: books, academic articles, magazines, documentaries, reliable websites, among others.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

  1. Group Formation: Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people and choose one of the four areas to focus on their project.

  2. Topic Selection: Each group will choose a topic within the chosen area that is relevant in the current world.

  3. Research and Discussion: Students must extensively research the topic, understanding its origin, current state, and potential future impact. At the same time, they should discuss the subject, sharing and confronting their ideas and findings.

  4. Planning the Presentation and Report: The group must plan how they will convey their findings, dividing responsibilities equally.

  5. Production of the Presentation and Report: Each group will produce a multimedia presentation and a detailed report on the chosen topic. The presentation should be clear, informative, and engaging, while the report needs to be thorough, rigorous, and academic.

  6. Review and Adjustments: Groups will collectively review their presentations and reports, making necessary adjustments.

  7. Final Presentation: Each group will present their findings to the class, followed by a question and answer session. The reports will be submitted to the teacher after the presentation.

Project Deliverables:

Groups must deliver two final products:

  1. Multimedia Presentation: This is the opportunity for students to share their findings with the class in a visual and engaging way. The presentation should reflect the depth and breadth of their research, as well as their ability to synthesize and communicate.

  2. Report: This document should detail the work done. It should contain four main sections:

    • Introduction: In this section, students must introduce the chosen topic and its relevance in the current context. They should also explain the project's objective and the motivation for choosing the topic.

    • Development: Here, students should detail the theory behind the chosen topic, explain the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained. In this section, it is crucial that students make clear connections with Enlightenment ideas and concepts.

    • Conclusion: In this part, students should summarize the main points discussed, explain the learnings obtained, and present their conclusions and perspectives for the future of the investigated topic.

    • Bibliography: Finally, students should cite all sources of information used during the research. All sources, whether a book, website, documentary, etc., should be correctly referenced.

At the end of this project, it is expected that students have acquired not only a greater understanding of the Enlightenment and its influence on the modern world but also important skills such as teamwork, research, and effective communication.
