Complex Numbers: Conjugate

Contextualization

Complex numbers, in turn, are the generalization of the real number domain and are of great importance for being useful in various areas of knowledge, such as engineering, physics, computer science, economics, among others. Within this universe of complex numbers, the concept of conjugate is a basic and essential topic for this discipline. Although it is quite technical, this topic is part of the plot of various problems and everyday situations, often without us realizing it.

A complex number is one that can be represented in the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is the imaginary unit (i² = -1). The conjugate of this complex number is the number a - bi. As can be seen, the conjugate of a complex number is obtained by changing the sign of the imaginary part of the number. The fundamental property of the conjugate is that the product of a complex number by its conjugate results in a real number.

Now, you must be wondering, why do we need to know this? The thing is, the conjugate of a complex number plays a fundamental role in many mathematical operations with complex numbers, such as division and obtaining the modulus (or magnitude) of a complex number. In addition, complex numbers and their conjugates play a crucial role in many practical applications in engineering and physics.

In the real world, complex numbers and their conjugates are routinely used to model phenomena in various areas of science and engineering. For example, in electrical engineering, complex numbers are used to represent impedance (resistance) in AC circuits. In physics, they are used to describe the amplitude and phase of waves, such as light or sound waves. In signal processing, they are used to analyze and design filters and control systems.

From now on, you will dive into this world of complex numbers, more specifically, you will work with conjugates. It is expected that, by the end of this project, the class will be able to understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of this subject, that is, the application of the conjugate of complex numbers in our daily lives.

Practical Activity - Project "Conjugating Complex Numbers"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide a better understanding of the topic of complex numbers - specifically conjugates - through theory and practice. The groups will explore, understand, and apply the concept of the conjugate of a complex number, performing calculations and demonstrations.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will have one month to complete the project. The project will have a workload of 5 to 10 hours per student.

Students will develop a model representing the Argand-Gauss plane (complex plane) and use it to represent complex numbers and their conjugates. In addition, they must perform calculations that demonstrate the properties of the conjugate of complex numbers.

Students should document the entire process and results in a report, which should include: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or paper
  • Colored pencils or pens
  • Ruler
  • Scientific calculator

Step by Step

Part 1: Construction of the Argand-Gauss Plane

  1. Using cardboard or paper, build a Cartesian plane. Label the horizontal axis as 'Re' (real part) and the vertical axis as 'Im' (imaginary part).

  2. Divide each axis into unit segments, ensuring that both positive and negative directions are represented.

Part 2: Representation of Complex Numbers and their Conjugates

  1. Select five random complex numbers a + bi. You can use the calculator to generate random numbers.

  2. Represent the chosen complex numbers on the Argand-Gauss plane, placing a point for each number in the location corresponding to the value of a on the 'Re' axis and the value of b on the 'Im' axis.

  3. Now, for each complex number you represented, represent its conjugate. Remember, the conjugate is the number with the equal real part and the imaginary part with the opposite sign.

Part 3: Mathematical Demonstrations

  1. Calculate the product of each complex number by its conjugate using the formula (a + bi)(a - bi) = a² + b². Verify that the result is a real number.

  2. Choose a pair of complex numbers and calculate the sum of their conjugates. Compare the result with the conjugate of the sum of the two initial complex numbers and verify if they are equal.

Part 4: Writing the Report

  1. Now that the practical part is complete, the next step is to write a detailed report documenting the entire process.

    • Introduction: Provide context for complex numbers and the concept of conjugate. Explain the importance and application of this concept in the real world. Clarify the objective of this project.

    • Development: Describe the activity in detail and explain the theory behind it. Present the methodology used and discuss the results obtained.

    • Conclusions: Recap the main points of the project, highlight the learnings, and draw conclusions from the project.

    • Bibliography: List the sources that were used to support the work.

Remember that the report should be as clear and complete as possible, so that anyone reading it can understand the theory of complex numbers and, in particular, the concept of conjugate, and how this activity demonstrates these concepts.
