Contextualization

Dance is an artistic expression that interacts directly with our human condition. It’s a language that allows us to communicate and express emotions, ideas, stories, and cultures through body movements. It’s not just a diversion or a hobby, but also a form of expressing personality, creativity, and cultures. The moving body becomes a communication tool that, when combined with music and rhythm, gains enormous power to excite and connect people.

In this context, studying dance in Physical Education is not just learning dance steps, but mainly understanding the meaning of movements, learning about different cultures, questioning prejudices and stereotypes, and expressing oneself in a creative and authentic way. Dance is also a complete physical activity that works the whole body, improving posture, motor coordination, flexibility, and body awareness, among other physical benefits.

In Brazil, we have a rich diversity of traditional dances that reflect the diverse cultural influences that form our national identity. From Frevo in Pernambuco, Samba in Rio de Janeiro, Carimbó in Pará, to Vanerão in the south of the country, each rhythm has its history, characteristic movements, and particularities that tell a little bit about the history and culture of our country.

In addition, we live in an increasingly globalized world, where we have access to various dances from different parts of the world, such as Argentine Tango, Spanish Flamenco, American Hip Hop, French Can Can, among many others. Learning about these dances is also a way to learn about and respect other cultures and strengthen ties with people from different origins and life stories.

I suggest that students explore the following resources to learn more about the subject:

  1. Book "The Body Speaks: The Silent Language of Nonverbal Communication" by Pierre Weil and Roland Tompakow
  2. Documentary "Dance Around the World" available on YouTube
  3. Research on typical Brazilian dances on the website: www.funarte.gov.br
  4. Research on world dances on the website: www.cidadedacultura.gal

Hands-on Activity

Title of the activity: "Exploring Dances from Brazil and the World"

Objective:

The objective of the project is to research, study, and present a traditional Brazilian dance and an international dance. In addition, students must explore the cultural, historical, and social contexts of the chosen dances, as well as their technical and artistic characteristics.

Detailed description of the project:

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, each group will choose a typical Brazilian dance and an international dance to study in depth.

The research should address:

  1. The origin of the dance (country, region, period)
  2. The history and evolution of the dance
  3. The cultural, social, and/or religious meaning of the dance
  4. The characteristic movements, rhythm, music, and costume
  5. Possible variations or styles of the dance
  6. Any stereotypes or prejudices associated with the dance
  7. The influence of this dance on contemporary society

After the research, each group must prepare a presentation that should include:

  1. An oral explanation of the aspects researched
  2. A dance presentation with the characteristic movements of the dance studied
  3. An explanatory or demonstrative video that will be shared with the class

Required materials:

  1. Access to the internet for research
  2. Comfortable clothes to dance
  3. Adequate space for rehearsals and presentations

Step by step:

  1. Formation of groups
  2. Choosing the dances to be researched
  3. Research on the chosen dances
  4. Preparation of the oral presentation
  5. Learning the dance movements
  6. Preparation and rehearsal of the dance presentation
  7. Production of the explanatory or demonstrative video
  8. Final presentation to the class

Project Delivery:

The groups must submit a written report that should follow the following format:

Introduction: Should contain a contextualization of both dances studied, their relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.

Development: Should explain the theory behind the central theme of the project, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used (research and practice), and present and discuss the results obtained (learning and presentations).

Conclusion: Should summarize the main points, explain what was learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project. Students should express their critical understanding of the dances studied, the associated prejudices and stereotypes, and the power relations involved.

References: Should indicate the sources they used to work on the project.

In addition to the report, the groups must also submit the video produced and perform the dance presentations for the class.

It is expected that at the end of the project, students will have acquired solid knowledge about the studied dances and will have developed technical and socioemotional skills such as time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking, proactivity, among others.
