Contextualization

Radiation is characterized as energy emitted through electromagnetic waves or particles. This radiation is naturally present on planet Earth and in the cosmos. In fact, the human body itself is a source of tiny radiations. The concept of radiation is closely related to modern physics and encompasses ionizing and non-ionizing radiations, which are characterized by the presence or absence of potential to ionize atoms and molecules.

In ionizing radiation, we have examples such as X-rays and alpha, beta, and gamma particles, which originate from the radioactive decay of atoms. Non-ionizing radiation, on the other hand, includes ultraviolet radiation, visible light, infrared radiation, and radio waves.

There are various practical applications of radiations in different areas, including medicine, industry, research, and energy production. However, it is important to note that, although radiation can be useful, it can also be dangerous to living beings if not properly controlled or if the exposure is excessively high.

Introduction

Radiation plays an important role in the modern world. Whether in the form of electromagnetic radiation providing long-distance communication, or in the form of ionizing radiation used in medical diagnosis and therapies, radiation is a topic that cannot be ignored.

But what makes radiation potentially dangerous? In this project, we will better understand the types of radiation and explore the risks they pose when not properly controlled.

Simultaneously, we will also explore ways to protect ourselves from these potentially harmful radiations, recognizing that information is the best defense. Despite the risks, we can live safely with radiation, as long as we can understand and control it properly.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Radiations and their Risks: An Investigation

Project Objective

This project aims to familiarize students with the types of radiation and their potential risks and benefits. At the same time, it emphasizes the need to develop a critical and informed understanding of radiation.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group must choose, research, and present a specific form of radiation (for example, X-rays, UV radiation, or Alpha radiation). Students should research and present the following topics related to the chosen radiation:

  • Properties of the specific chosen radiation
  • Useful applications and benefits of the radiation
  • Risks and effects of overexposure
  • Ways to protect against radiation

Groups will have one week to research and document their findings. The final product will be a written report and an oral presentation. Research can be done online or through physical books and articles, if available.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Writing materials
  • Presentation materials (can be slides, posters, videos, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Each group must choose a type of radiation to research.
  2. Conduct in-depth research on the chosen radiation type, covering the four topics above.
  3. Document your findings in a written report. The report should include an introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.
  4. Prepare an oral presentation for the rest of the class, emphasizing key points of your research.

Project Deliverables

Each group must deliver a final report (written) consisting of:

  • Introduction: The chosen topic and its relevance to our society.
  • Development: Detailed discussion of the four aspects of the chosen topic - properties, applications, risks, and protection. Provide a summary of the theory on radiation and also detail the research methodology used.
  • Conclusion: The main learnings from the project and the implications of a proper understanding of radiation.
  • Bibliography: References of all sources used during the project.

In addition, groups will make an oral presentation of their findings to the class, highlighting the main points of their research.

Students will be evaluated based on the quality and depth of their research, the clarity and coherence of their written report, and their oral presentation.
