Verbs: Classification and Inflection in Number and Person

Contextualization

Introduction

The study of verbs is a central topic in the Portuguese discipline, and understanding them is essential for the correct and effective expression of ideas. In this project, we will focus specifically on the classification of verbs and their inflections in number and person.

Verbs are words that indicate an action, a state, or a phenomenon, placing them in time (past, present, or future). They are the backbone of any sentence, giving it meaning and direction. Furthermore, verbs are categorized into different groups based on their characteristics: regular verbs, irregular verbs, auxiliary verbs, transitive verbs, and intransitive verbs.

Verb inflection, on the other hand, refers to how they change to indicate various grammatical features such as tense, mood, number, and person. This flexibility of the verb allows us to communicate a wide range of information and nuances of meaning.

Contextualization

Mastering the classification and inflection of verbs is crucial not only for writing and speaking Portuguese correctly but also for enhancing the ability to comprehend texts. This is particularly relevant for high school students who will soon be taking college entrance exams and ENEM, where a solid understanding of these concepts is required.

Furthermore, the ability to use verbs correctly has practical applications in all areas of life - from writing emails and reports at work to effectively communicating with others. It also aids in the comprehension of more complex texts, such as classic literature, academic articles, and official documents.

Activity

Activity Title: "Dramatizing Verbs"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to provide students with a deeper understanding of the classification and inflection of verbs through research, reflection, group collaboration, and ultimately, the creation and execution of a theatrical piece that creatively and clearly incorporates the concepts studied.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for writing and staging a short theatrical piece (5 to 7 minutes). The piece should include the personification of different types of verbs (regular, irregular, auxiliary, transitive, intransitive) and also demonstrate the inflection of verbs in number and person.

Students will be encouraged to be creative in their representations, but they must also ensure that the piece is educational and informative, correctly presenting the relevant grammatical concepts. For example, they can create a story in which verbs are characters that interact with each other.

Required Materials:

  • Research materials (books, internet access).
  • Materials for creating a written script of the piece (paper, pens, computer).
  • Space for rehearsal and execution of the piece.
  • Materials for sets and costumes, if desired by the groups.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Research (2 hours): Initially, students should research in-depth about the classification and inflection of verbs. They should consult the recommended sources in the project's context section, but they are also free to seek other sources. During the research, students should take note of the main points for later reference.

  2. Script Planning (3 hours): Based on the research conducted, students should start planning the piece. They should divide the grammatical concepts among the group members, who will personify them in the piece. Each character should embody the characteristics and behavior of the type of verb or inflection they represent.

  3. Script Writing (2 hours): After planning the piece, students should write the script. The script should include clear indications of when and how the grammatical concepts are demonstrated during the piece.

  4. Rehearsals (2-3 hours): Students should rehearse the piece several times, ensuring they are correctly representing the grammatical concepts. They should adjust the script as necessary during rehearsals.

  5. Piece Execution (7 minutes): Finally, students should present the piece to the class. They should strive to make the piece both educational and fun, facilitating the audience's understanding of the grammatical concepts.

  6. Project Report (2 hours): After completing the piece, each group should prepare a report documenting the project. The report should have the following sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

    • Introduction: The relevance and application of the concepts studied in the real world, the objective of this project, and briefly what was accomplished.
    • Development: Detailed description of the project, indicating the theory behind verbs, the activities carried out, the methodology used, and how the results were obtained.
    • Conclusion: Conclusions about the project, the lessons learned, whether the objective was achieved or not, and suggestions for future similar projects.
    • Bibliography: List of all sources that students consulted during the project.

The total time for project execution should be approximately 9 to 12 hours per student.
