Narrative Typology: Lived Experience Account

Contextualization

Sharing an experience is a unique and personal way to narrate events that have happened in someone's life. In this activity, we will dive into the world of personal experience narratives and explore various ways to tell a story. Let's start with a simple introduction to key concepts.

A personal experience narrative is a narrative form that describes an experience of the author. This experience can be an event, a journey, a special moment, etc. What matters is the ability to convey to the reader the essence of the experience, the emotions, and the impressions.

A personal experience narrative usually encompasses three main parts. The introduction presents the situation and describes the context of the experience; the development reports on the incident or life experience, together with the author's thoughts, feelings, and reactions to it; and the conclusion reflects on the meaning and implications of the experience.

In this project, we will encourage the students' creativity, motivating them to share their personal experiences with their classmates, fostering an environment of respect and empathy. In this context, the ability to express oneself clearly and articulately will be essential, reinforcing the importance of the Portuguese language discipline in the student's comprehensive education.

Personal experience narratives have wide-ranging use in everyday life, from informal conversations between friends to professional presentations. For a writer, the ability to recount personal experiences is crucial because it helps transform real-life events into meaningful and engaging stories. For a student, learning to recount personal experiences can help in disciplines where personal reflection and subjective understanding are valued, in addition to stimulating empathy and respect for the point of view of others.

Understanding what a personal experience narrative is and what its characteristics are is essential for developing narrative text writing, broadening the students' capacity for expression.

To delve deeper into the subject, I suggest reading the book "The Art of Storytelling in the 21st Century: Tradition and Innovation" by Betty Coelho and searching the Nova Escola website, which contains articles, videos, and lesson plans on the subject.

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to provide 7th-grade students with the opportunity to produce a personal experience narrative in podcast format, valuing the competencies of writing, reading, interpretation, oral expression, and teamwork.

Detailed Project Description

The students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group must choose a real experience lived by one of the members to be the theme of the narrative. The challenge will be to narrate this experience in a podcast format, a very popular medium nowadays.

The podcast should be between 10 and 15 minutes long and, as a personal experience narrative, should have an introduction, a development of the story, and a conclusion. Students should also use sound elements (music, sound effects, etc.) to make the podcast more engaging and dynamic.

Materials Required

  1. Notebook or smartphone for recording the podcast.
  2. Free audio editing software (such as Audacity or Anchor).
  3. Materials for writing the script (paper and pen or word processing software).

Detailed Step-by-Step for the Activity

  1. Group formation and theme selection: Each group must choose an experience lived by one of the members to be the theme of the narrative. The choice of theme should be made democratically and should provide a space for respect and empathy.

  2. Research and preparation: Students should research the structure of the personal experience narrative and the formatting of podcasts.

  3. Script: Each group must create a script for their podcast, including the introduction, the narrative of the story, and the conclusion. The script should also include moments for inserting sound elements.

  4. Recording: Students should record the podcast according to the previously defined script, using the available technological resources.

  5. Editing: Students should use the audio editing software to enhance the podcast, inserting music, and sound effects.

  6. Presentation: Each group should present the podcast to the class.

  7. Incorporating the podcast into the report: Finally, each group should prepare a detailed report on the experience, including:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the project, relevance, and application in the real world, the objective of the podcast.
  • Development: Theory on personal experience narrative and podcast, detailed description of the podcast creation process, methodology used, presentation, and discussion of the results.
  • Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: Sources used during the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
  1. Delivery: The project should be delivered after one week and should include both the report and the podcast.

Project Delivery and Connection with Suggested Activities

At the end of the project, students should deliver the podcast, along with the detailed report in written format. This will provide the teacher with a clear understanding of the creative and collaborative process of the team, in addition to directly assessing the knowledge acquired by the students about personal experience narratives and podcast production.

The written report is a fundamental part of the project, as it allows students to express their thoughts, ideas, and conclusions in a structured and organized manner. The report should complement the podcast, providing theoretical support for the practice.

The project "True Stories in the Classroom" will allow students to work on the technical and socio-emotional skills necessary for collaborative work and the production of personal experience narratives, in addition to providing a creative and engaging experience.
