America: Latin American Blocks

Context

Latin America, a geographical and cultural region composed of 20 countries stretching from the southern United States to the southern tip of the American continent, is extremely rich and diverse. This region has been the scene of a series of economic and political integration efforts that have resulted in the formation of several regional blocs.

The formation of these blocs is peculiar and presents marked differences when compared to the formation of economic blocs in other parts of the world. This Latin American particularity offers us a unique opportunity to study geographical, economic, and political phenomena that are both global and regional.

Introduction

The study of economic blocs in Latin America is crucial for understanding the international division of labor and how the countries in the region integrate into the global economy. These blocs were established with the intention of facilitating trade among member countries, attracting foreign investments, and even strengthening the region's position on the international stage.

There are several Latin American blocs, each with its own characteristics and specific objectives. Some examples are Mercosur (Southern Common Market), OAS (Organization of American States), Unasur (Union of South American Nations), and ALBA (Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas). The study of these blocs provides us with a deep understanding of the region's political and economic dynamics.

Practical Activity - Debating Latin American Blocs

Activity Objective

This activity aims to deepen the knowledge about the main economic blocs in Latin America, their formation, the economic and political characteristics of the countries involved, as well as the impacts of these alliances. Each group will be responsible for studying and formally presenting an economic bloc.

Activity Description

Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will choose a Latin American economic bloc to research in depth. The economic blocs available for study are: Mercosur, OAS, OEI, NAFTA, UNASUR, ALBA, Andean Community, and ALADI.

Each group should prepare a comprehensive and engaging presentation on the chosen economic bloc, considering the following topics:

  • Origin and history of the bloc
  • Member countries and their main economic characteristics
  • Main objectives and achievements of the bloc
  • Challenges and criticisms faced by the bloc
  • Impacts of the bloc on the cultural and economic integration of Latin America

Required Materials

  • Reference books and internet access for research
  • Materials for creating slides or posters for presentation
  • Note-taking materials for the report

Step by Step

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Each group chooses one of the economic blocs to research.

  3. The groups conduct detailed research on their chosen economic bloc, using the recommended resources and any other reliable sources.

  4. Each group prepares a presentation on the chosen economic bloc, addressing the suggested topics.

  5. Each group presents to the class.

  6. After the presentations, the groups should write a detailed report on the economic bloc they studied.

Report

The report, which is the final project deliverable, should include the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Should introduce the report's topic (the economic bloc that was researched), its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective.

  2. Development: Should detail the theory related to the economic bloc, the methodology used in the project, the activities carried out in detail, and the results obtained. This section should provide a good discussion on the productive characteristics of the member countries, the intervention of international organizations, the importance of integration bodies, and the formation of the economic bloc.

  3. Conclusions: Should summarize the main points discussed in the report, present the acquired learnings, and draw conclusions about the researched economic bloc.

  4. Bibliography: Should list the sources of information used in the project, including books, videos, websites, etc.

Completing this activity will give students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on a crucial Geography topic, practice research, presentation, and writing skills, and develop socio-emotional competencies such as time management, communication, and teamwork.
