Contextualization

The regionalization of the American continent is a topic of great importance in Geography. In order to better study and understand the various realities present in America, geographers divide it into smaller parts, or regions, with similar and distinct characteristics. These regions are: North America, Central America, and South America. Each of these regions has its own characteristics in terms of economy, culture, politics, and population that dignify its uniqueness in geographical studies.

For example, North America is mainly composed of the developed countries Canada and the United States, and Mexico, a developing country. Central and South America, on the other hand, include Latin American countries, mostly developing, with common characteristics in terms of language (predominance of Spanish, with the exception of Brazil, Guyana, and Suriname), historical colonization, and political-economic issues.

The importance of studying the regionalization of America lies in understanding these differences and similarities, in reading the historical process that shaped the current reality of this continent, and in interpreting the ongoing socio-economic and environmental dynamics.

It is relevant for the understanding of topics such as the formation and geopolitical organization of countries, the socio-economic issues that cross the continent, such as poverty, social inequality, migrations, ethnic conflicts, among others. In addition, the analysis of the regionalization of America allows for reflection on processes of urbanization, population distribution and dynamics, environmental issues, and sustainability.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Explorers of America

Project Objective:

The objective is for students to deepen their knowledge about the regionalization of America and its diversity, investigating economic, political, cultural, and geographical aspects. They should produce a detailed report and also create an interactive map using Google Earth tools, where the researched data will be visualized in an organized and playful way.

Project Description:

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for a specific region of America: North, Central, or South. Each group will conduct research covering different aspects of this region, such as geographical, political, economic, and cultural characteristics. They should also investigate urban planning and common social issues in large Latin American cities.

Additionally, they should create an interactive map on Google Earth, where they will mark significant locations related to the topics covered, with descriptions and images.

Required Materials:

• Computer equipment with internet access;
• Google account for using Google Earth;
• Research materials, such as books, articles, and reliable websites;
• Software for report production (Word, Google Docs, etc).

Activity Steps:

1. Group Formation and Distribution of America's Regions: The teacher can either form the groups or let the students organize themselves. Each group will receive a region of America to research.

2. Research: Students should conduct comprehensive research on the assigned region. They should address economic, political, cultural, geographical, and urban characteristics, as well as the main issues in large cities. They should use reliable and varied resources, such as books, articles, websites, documentaries, etc.

3. Creation of the Interactive Map: Alongside the research, students should create an interactive map on Google Earth, where they will mark locations of interest related to the researched topics. Each marking should include a brief description and, if possible, images.

4. Report Production: Based on the research conducted, students should elaborate a detailed report, covering the four main topics (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography) and reporting the discoveries, analyses, learnings, and conclusions about the regionalization of America. The report should be linked to the interactive map, where each marked point should be contextualized and analyzed.

5. Final Presentation: Finally, students will present their project to the teacher and the class, explaining their findings and conclusions. This presentation will be part of the project evaluation.

Given the depth and scope of the project, it is estimated to take more than twelve hours per student to be executed and should be developed over several weeks.

The deliverables of this project include:

• Interactive Map on Google Earth: Students must create an interactive map on Google Earth, with markings of locations of interest, accompanied by descriptions and images. This map should be shared with the teacher.

• Written Report: Students must produce a detailed report on the regionalization of America based on their research. This report should be deeply connected to the interactive map, where each marking on the map is explained and analyzed in detail in the report.

• Final Presentation: Students must present their project to the teacher and the class, explaining their findings, analyses, and conclusions.
