Environmental problems in Africa constitute a crucial and current theme in Geography. The environmental consequences of human actions in the region have been profound and long-lasting, affecting biodiversity, soil quality, water availability and quality, and directly impacting the lives of millions of people.

Africa is the second most populous continent in the world and occupies 20% of the Earth's surface. The continent's natural wealth is abundant, with a great diversity of natural resources and incredible biodiversity. However, despite all this richness, the continent faces serious environmental challenges. Among them, we can mention desertification, soil degradation, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and climate change.

The environmental problems in Africa are not only local but also global. Actions that cause environmental degradation in Africa have impacts beyond the continent's borders. The degradation of key ecosystems, such as tropical forests, affects global climate regulation and worldwide biodiversity. Therefore, understanding and finding solutions to these problems is vital for global sustainability.

Education is an essential tool to address these challenges. Understanding the problems, their causes, and consequences is the first step in developing solutions. This project aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of African environmental problems, as well as to stimulate critical thinking to seek and propose solutions to these problems.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Solution for the Environmental Challenge"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for each group to investigate one of the main environmental problems in Africa, identify its causes and consequences, and propose a practical solution to combat it.

Detailed Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for investigating one of the environmental problems in Africa and seeking a solution to the problem.

The problems to be studied are:

1. Desertification
2. Soil Degradation
3. Water Pollution
4. Loss of Biodiversity
5. Climate Change

Each group should research the problem, identify its causes and consequences both in the African context and globally, and propose a practical and viable strategy to combat this problem.

Required Materials

Groups will need internet access for research, and materials to produce the presentation such as paper, pens, laptop, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint, Google Slides).

Step by Step

1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 members and assign each team one of the environmental problems mentioned above.
2. Each group should conduct a detailed research on the problem, exploring its causes, impacts in Africa and globally, and possible solutions.
3. Based on the research, each group should develop a practical and viable action plan to mitigate the problem.
4. Each group will prepare a 10 to 15-minute presentation describing the problem, its causes and impacts, and the proposed action.
5. Each group will present their results to the class, followed by a question and answer session.

Deliverables

Each group must deliver:

1. An oral presentation to the class.
2. A detailed report written in a maximum of 5 pages (containing: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography).

In the report:

• The introduction should provide an overview of the environmental problem, why it is important, and what the report will address.
• In the development, students should describe in detail the research conducted, including the methodology used, the identified causes and consequences, and the proposed action. This is the place to discuss the results obtained from the research.
• The conclusion should discuss what the group learned throughout the study, how the proposed action could solve the problem, and how the solution could be implemented.
• Finally, the bibliography should list all sources consulted during the research.

Through this practical activity, students will research the problems, synthesize information, develop solutions, and present the results of their work, applying various skills such as research, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.
