In this project, we will explore an important part of mathematics called Sequences. Sequences are lists of numbers that follow a specific pattern and are a central concept in mathematics. We will focus on two types of sequences: numerical sequences and figure sequences.

To understand numerical sequences, imagine a series of numbers where each number is a constant increment from the previous number, such as 2, 4, 6, 8. This is an example of a numerical sequence. Figure sequences are a visual expression of this. For example, a group of triangles where each additional triangle increases the total number of sides in the figure.

Sequences are part of many structures in our world. They are present in everyday moments like checking the temperature every day over a month. A numerical sequence is also used in areas such as finance and engineering. For example, banks use numerical sequences to calculate compound interest. In engineering, sequences are useful for the construction of bridges and buildings. In these cases, the sequence can represent the force that each piece of the structure must withstand.

By studying sequences, you will not only understand an important concept in mathematics, but also develop skills that are fundamental in various professions and daily activities. You will be able to identify patterns, predict future behaviors, and solve complex problems systematically.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Building Sequences: Integrating Mathematics and Arts"

Project Objective:

This project aims to deepen the understanding of numerical and figure sequences, encouraging teamwork, critical thinking, and the application of mathematical concepts in art.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for studying and presenting two distinct sequences: a numerical sequence and a figure sequence. The project will therefore have two main parts: the research and theoretical study of the sequences and the creation of an artistic representation that illustrates the studied sequences.

Necessary Materials:

  1. Notebooks or paper for notes and calculations.
  2. Artistic materials preferred by the group (paints, colored pencils, markers, clay, fabrics, etc).
  3. Textbooks and internet access for research.
  4. A camera or smartphone to document the process and the final result (optional).

Step by Step:

  1. Each group must choose a numerical sequence and a figure sequence to study. It is important that the sequences have an appropriate level of complexity for the 8th grade.

  2. After choosing the sequences, the groups should research about them, understand their regularities, and how to construct the next terms. Students are expected to be able to identify the regularity of a numerical or figural sequence, recursive or not, and build an algorithm, using flowcharts to indicate the following numbers or figures.

  3. Once the concept of the chosen sequences is understood, the next step is to create an artistic representation that demonstrates these sequences. Art can be done using the group's preferred material, this being a way to integrate mathematics with art. Students should be encouraged to be creative in their representation.

  4. Document the creative process. This can be done by writing about the process or taking photos and making videos.

  5. Finally, the group must write a report that should include: Introduction (contextualization of the chosen sequences, relevance and objective of the project), Development (theory of the sequences, detailed description of the activity, methodology used, and discussion of the results), Conclusion (summary of the main points, learnings, and conclusions about the project), and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables:

Groups must deliver the artistic representation of the sequences and the written report. The report should be written clearly and coherently, ensuring that the project development stages are well evident. This report will be crucial to assess the students' understanding of the topic and how they were able to connect mathematics and art in a creative and innovative way.

The project evaluation will not only be about the correct understanding of the sequences, but also about the ability to work in a team, manage time, communicate effectively, and apply creative thinking. The project as a whole will require around 12 hours per group member to complete.
