Basic Second Degree Equation

Contextualization

The quadratic equation is a central concept in mathematics and its applications extend to various disciplines and real-world situations. A quadratic equation is expressed in the general form 'ax^2 + bx + c = 0', where 'a' cannot be zero, and 'a', 'b', and 'c' are constants. Furthermore, the quadratic equation presents a graph in the form of a parabola when represented on the Cartesian plane.

In this way, quadratic equations are the foundation for understanding more advanced concepts in mathematics and science, including geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and physics. Additionally, the ability to solve these equations can help develop logical and problem-solving skills.

Importance of the Quadratic Equation

The applications of the quadratic equation are diverse and permeate our lives, even indirectly. When calculating the trajectory of a moving object, optimizing the area of a space, or even understanding how a parabola works, we are referring to situations that involve the quadratic equation.

Furthermore, learning the quadratic equation is essential for disciplines such as Physics, Engineering, Economics, among others. Therefore, having a good understanding of this concept allows not only to solve mathematical problems but also to better understand the world around us.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Parabolic Project'

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with a deep understanding and appreciation of the quadratic equation, allowing them to visualize and interact with it in a practical and playful way.

Project Description

In this project, students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people and use their knowledge of the quadratic equation to design and build a physical structure that represents a parabola - the graphical visualization of a quadratic equation.

The structure must be made of recyclable materials and must be large enough to visually represent the parabola of a quadratic equation. In addition to the construction, students should also develop a presentation explaining the quadratic equation represented, how they built the structure as a team, and what challenges they encountered and overcame during the process.

This project combines mathematics with art, engineering, and sustainability, encouraging creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and environmental awareness.

Necessary Materials

  • Recyclable materials (cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, paper tubes, etc.)
  • Pens, pencils, and erasers
  • Ruler, compass, and square
  • Glue and tape
  • Computer with internet access (for research and presentation preparation)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation and Initial Research: Students should form groups and start researching to deepen their knowledge about the quadratic equation and its graphical representations in parabolas.

  2. Structure Planning: Each group should create a detailed plan for their parabolic structure, including a sketch of how it will be physically and a description of how it represents the quadratic equation.

  3. Structure Construction: Following the plan, students will build their structure using recyclable materials. During this phase, they should work together, communicate effectively, and solve problems that arise.

  4. Project Presentation: Each group should prepare a presentation explaining the quadratic equation represented by their structure, how they worked together to build it, and what challenges they faced and overcame in the process.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group should deliver:

  1. The physical structure of the parabola: the physical representation of the quadratic equation, made from recyclable materials.

  2. Presentation: a detailed and well-founded explanation of the project, including the quadratic equation represented, the construction process, and the challenges overcome.

  3. Written Report:

    • Introduction: In this section, students should contextualize the quadratic equation, its importance, general applications and in the project, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Here, students should detail the theory of the quadratic equation, the methodology used to build the structure, the equation they chose to represent, how it was represented in the structure, and the results they obtained.
    • Conclusion: In this part, students should revisit the project's objectives, highlight the learnings acquired, both in terms of technical skills and socioemotional skills, and express their conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Finally, students should indicate all sources consulted during the project development.

This project should last at least four weeks, with an average of three hours of work per student per week.
