Basic Electrical Circuits

Context

This week, we will explore the fascinating world of electrical circuits. You've probably heard of them, but do you know what they really are? An electrical circuit is a closed path through which electrons - microscopic particles that carry electricity - flow, generating the electrical energy we use in our homes, schools, cities, and even our own bodies!

Electrical circuits are made up of key components, such as a power source (usually a battery), conductive wires, and a load (such as a light bulb or a motor, for example). When the circuit is complete, that is, when there are no interruptions in the path that the electrons must follow, we say that the circuit is closed and the load is powered by the electrical energy from the source.

There are two types of circuits: series and parallel. In series circuits, the electric current passes through all the components one after the other, while in parallel circuits, the current divides and passes through each component independently. Each type of circuit has its own characteristics and applications, which we will explore in more depth during our hands-on activity.

Now let's put things into context: why is it essential to understand electrical circuits? Well, as you can imagine, they are everywhere! Without them, we wouldn't have light in our homes, nor could we charge our cell phones or watch television. Moreover, understanding how circuits work is essential for safety. A badly made circuit can cause short circuits and even fires!

In industry and technology, electrical circuits are equally important. They are the basis of electronic devices, from the simplest ones like a toaster to the most complex ones like a robot or an electric car. Not to mention the importance of electrical circuits in medicine, where they are used in MRI machines, pacemakers, and many others.

To deepen your knowledge and prepare for our project, we suggest reading the chapter "Electrical Circuits" from the book "Physics for Elementary School" by Francisco Ramalho Junior, Nelson Gewandsznajder, and Alberto Gaspar, available in our library. In addition, we recommend the video "Understanding the electrical circuit" by Khan Academy Brazil, on YouTube, which provides a dynamic and easy-to-understand explanation of the topic.

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title: "Building and Comparing Electrical Circuits"

Project Objective

In this activity, in groups of 3 to 5 students, you will build two types of electrical circuits: one in series and one in parallel, using simple and common materials. The objective is to understand in practice how these circuits work, their differences, and their applications in everyday life.

Detailed Project Description

The activity will be divided into three stages:

  1. Theoretical Study: Study the types of electrical circuits (series and parallel), how they are formed, what their characteristics are, and their practical applications.

  2. Building the Circuits: Build the series and parallel electrical circuits using the indicated materials.

  3. Documentation and Discussion: Document the project by writing a report, including the topics: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.

Required Materials

  • 2 small light bulbs (e.g., flashlight bulbs)
  • 4 electrical wires with stripped ends
  • 1 small battery
  • 1 switch (optional)

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity

  1. Series Circuit: Connect the battery to the two electrical wires. Then, connect one of these wires to a light bulb and the other wire to the other light bulb. Close the circuit by connecting the other end of the second light bulb to the opposite pole of the battery. Once the circuit is closed, the lights should turn on. Check the light intensity.

  2. Parallel Circuit: Now, undo the series circuit and prepare to make the parallel circuit. Connect the battery to the two electrical wires. Then, connect each wire to its respective light bulb. Now, use two extra wires to connect the light bulbs to each other, forming a bridge. This way, you will have made a parallel circuit. When you close the circuit, the lights should turn on. Compare the light intensity with that of the series circuit.

Project Deliverables and Connections to the Activities

At the end of the project, each group must submit a report containing four main topics:

  1. Introduction: Contextualize the topic, its relevance, and its real-world application. Include the objective of this project.

  2. Development: Explain the theory of series and parallel electrical circuits, indicating their characteristics and practical applications. Describe the details of the construction of the circuits and the methodology used. Present the results obtained, including the differences observed in the intensity of the light bulbs in the two circuits.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the work, highlighting the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn about the results of the circuits constructed.

  4. Bibliography: List the sources of information used during the project, including books, videos, websites, etc.

This written document should be at least two pages long and no more than four. We recommend a group discussion before writing so that everyone can contribute to the report.

Remember that this project is an opportunity to develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, and problem solving. Therefore, plan your teamwork well, coordinate your actions and support each other during the project execution.
