Syntax: Apposition

Contextualization

Our Portuguese language is extremely rich and diverse, full of rules and exceptions, and one of the topics that often causes doubts is the appositive. An appositive is a term that joins another of substantive or pronominal value to explain or specify it better. It is separated from the rest of the sentence by commas, colons, or even parentheses.

Thus, we can divide the appositive into categories: explanatory, enumerative, summative, and comparative. Each of them has its characteristics and ways of use. The explanatory appositive, for example, has the function of providing additional explanation about the term it refers to. The enumerative one lists details or elements related to the term. The summative appositive gives a brief summary of the term it refers to, and the comparative one establishes a comparison.

We need to understand that the use of the appositive is completely embedded in our day-to-day communication, whether in oral or written language. It is used in books, magazines, newspapers, blogs, social media, and even in informal conversations. Mastering this resource of the Portuguese language will make our speech and writing richer and more precise. That is why we are going to deepen our knowledge on this topic.

To start our journey, I suggest some reliable resources in Portuguese:

  1. The book 'Gramática da Língua Portuguesa' by Bechara, available in libraries and bookstores, is an excellent source of consultation.

  2. The website 'Português', available at https://www.portugues.com.br/gramatica/aposto.html. It has a section dedicated to appositives, presenting clear definitions and examples.

  3. The platform 'YouTube', available at https://www.youtube.com/. Look for classes on appositives and watch explanatory videos from 'Professor Noslen' and 'Professor Gabriela Cabral'. Both channels have high-quality content.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Exploring the Appositive in Context'

Project Objective

We want to challenge you, students, and your colleagues to master the use of the appositive in the Portuguese language. We want you to understand the concept, know how to use it correctly, and be able to identify its use in concrete situations. Additionally, we hope you develop teamwork skills, time management, analytical thinking, and creative writing.

Detailed Project Description

You will work in groups of 3 to 5 students. The project will consist of two main parts: initial research and development of a theatrical piece. Each stage of the project must contain a written evaluation to consolidate learning.

Part 1: Research and Study

Each group must conduct initial research and study about the appositive, its categories and uses, its rules, and its exceptions. Each student will be responsible for deepening their knowledge in a specific category of the appositive (explanatory, enumerative, summative, and comparative).

Use the suggested resources in the introduction, but do not limit yourselves to them. If you find other high-quality sources, use and explore them!

Part 2: Development of a Theatrical Piece

After the research and study, each group must develop and present a short theatrical piece (15 to 20 minutes) that demonstrates the use of the appositive. The piece must contain at least two scenes where each type of appositive (explanatory, enumerative, summative, and comparative) is used. The script of the piece must be written by the students themselves.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Textbooks and grammars (for consultation and theoretical basis)
  • Material for notes (notebook, pencil, pen)
  • Camera for recording the theatrical piece (can be a group member's cell phone)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Divide into groups and determine which member will focus on which type of appositive;
  2. Conduct the necessary research and studies. Remember: delve into your type of appositive, but do not forget to have a general understanding of all types;
  3. Gather to discuss your findings and learnings. Teach each other;
  4. Develop the story and script of the piece. Remember to include all types of appositives in the characters' lines;
  5. Rehearse and record the piece;
  6. Watch the recorded video and provide a critical analysis. Identify where you used the appositives and how they contributed to the story.

Project Deliverables

Each group must present:

  1. A written report on the research and studies about the appositive. This report should follow the structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography;
  2. The written script of the theatrical piece;
  3. The recording of the theatrical piece;
  4. A critical analysis of the piece, identifying where the appositives were used and how they contributed to the story.

All documents must be typed and delivered in PDF format. The recording of the piece can be submitted as a link to a video platform, such as YouTube or Vimeo.

Remember: the final goal is not only to understand what an appositive is, but to be able to use it efficiently and recognize its use in various contexts. Good luck and have fun!
