Conscious Consumption and Environmental Issues

Contextualization

Conscious Consumption is a practice that has been gaining more and more relevance in the 21st century. It is about acquiring and using products and services in a way that minimizes the impact on the environment and social life. It is about being aware of the ecological footprint that our daily actions leave on the planet and making purchasing and consumption decisions that reflect this awareness.

In an increasingly globalized and interconnected world, our actions have consequences that go beyond our immediate communities. The production and consumption of goods have impacts that range from the extraction of natural resources to the production and distribution of goods, generating social and environmental impacts in all phases of this process.

In this project, we will explore the concept of Conscious Consumption in detail. We will discuss the impacts of consumption on the environment and society, and develop ways to minimize these impacts in a practical and tangible way. The goal of this project is to provide new perspectives on what it means to consume consciously and to encourage the adoption of more sustainable consumption practices.

Importance of Conscious Consumption

Conscious Consumption is of vital importance for the sustainable development of the planet. By consuming consciously, we are contributing to the preservation of natural resources, the reduction of pollution and waste, as well as favoring social and economic justice.

Our choices as consumers have the power to influence how products are manufactured and distributed. When we opt for sustainably produced products, we are encouraging companies and industries to adopt more sustainable practices.

Below are some resources that can help you delve into the topic and prepare for the project:

  1. Sustainable Consumption Portal
  2. Akatu Institute for Conscious Consumption
  3. Ministry of the Environment's Conscious Consumption Booklet
  4. "The Story of Stuff" Video Series

Remember, Conscious Consumption is not just about buying "green" or recycled products. It is a lifestyle that involves making informed choices that consider the environmental and social impacts of our actions.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Conscious Consumption in Practice

Project Objectives

  • Deeply understand the concept of conscious consumption.
  • Analyze one's own consumption behavior.
  • Investigate conscious consumption practices in the community.
  • Propose solutions to encourage conscious consumption in the community.
  • Develop collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Integrate knowledge from science and mathematics.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Within the perspective of conscious consumption, the groups should conduct an analysis of the behavior of their own group of students and the community where they live (school, neighborhood).

They should also investigate companies and organizations in the region that stand out for their practice of conscious consumption. Based on the analysis and investigation, the groups should create a project that promotes conscious consumption in the school community.

The project should be presented in the form of an 'Awareness Event on Conscious Consumption', which could be a workshop, an exhibition, a lecture, a play, among others.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research.
  • Notebook for notes.
  • Camera for documentation (optional).
  • Various materials for the Awareness Event (could be posters, conscious snack foods, recycled objects for exhibition, etc.).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Research and discuss as a group about the concept of conscious consumption.
  2. Survey the consumption behavior of the group itself and the school community.
  3. Identify companies and organizations in the region that practice conscious consumption.
  4. Analyze the collected data and identify problems and opportunities to encourage conscious consumption in the school community.
  5. Create a project for an Awareness Event on Conscious Consumption.
  6. Plan and carry out the Awareness Event.
  7. Prepare a detailed project report.

Project Deliverables

  • Research diary and observations on the consumption behavior of the group itself and the school community.
  • Research report on companies and organizations that practice conscious consumption in the region.
  • Detailed project of the Awareness Event on Conscious Consumption.
  • Execution of the Awareness Event.
  • Final project report covering: Introduction (contextualization and objectives), Development (theory, detailed activity, methodology, results), Conclusion (learnings and conclusions), and Bibliography (references used).

The written document should be elaborated collaboratively and each group member should contribute to all parts of the report. The Introduction should provide a clear view of the importance of conscious consumption and the objective of the activity. In the Development section, students should detail the research and analysis process, the planning and execution of the Event, and the results obtained. The Conclusions should reflect on teamwork, learnings, and the effectiveness of the awareness initiative. The Bibliography should contain all references used throughout the project.
