Contextualization

Throughout history, humankind has been guided by curiosity and the desire to explore the unknown. In the past, sailors set out in search of new continents. Today, we gaze up at the sky and ask ourselves: are we alone? Is there life beyond Earth?

There are several key theoretical concepts that help us explore these questions. Firstly, it is essential to understand the conditions necessary for life as we know it: liquid water, an energy source, and a stable atmosphere, to name a few.

Secondly, there is a wide range of technologies that make it possible for us to explore space. For example, telescopes and space probes help us study planets and moons in and outside our solar system, looking for promising signs of life.

Thirdly, it is useful to understand how life arose and evolved on Earth because this gives us clues about what kind of life we might expect to find on other planets.

The concepts mentioned above are just a starting point, but they are fundamental for beginning to unlock the secrets of life in the universe.

The search for life beyond Earth is a question that has been debated for centuries and continues to be a subject of scientific research and debate today. Not only does it raise fundamental questions about our own existence, but it also has practical implications. For example, if we were to find life on Mars or one of Jupiter’s moons, it could revolutionize our understanding of life itself.

Furthermore, the search for extraterrestrial life pushes the boundaries of our technology, driving scientific and technological progress that could lead to advancements that benefit all of humanity.

Practical Activity: Pax Interplanetary Station

Project Objective

The objective of the “Pax Interplanetary Station” activity is to generate more in-depth research and reflection on the possibilities of life outside Earth and the conditions for human survival on other planets.

Students will be challenged to design a space station on a planet of their choice (within the solar system) that can support human life. They must consider various factors, including the conditions of the planet, the resources needed to sustain human life, the feasibility of traveling to the planet, and possible solutions to the challenges that will arise.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, must research and select a planet in the solar system for the installation of the “Pax” station. Each group must take into account the specific conditions of their chosen planet and how those conditions would affect human life.

Students should design the "Pax" station, considering: housing, food resources, water and air, solutions to the challenges presented by the planet's climate and terrain, transportation, and travel time to the planet.

Students should then present their “Pax” station project in the form of a report that contains the sections: introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.

Materials Needed

This project requires only research materials, such as books, reliable websites from scientific institutions, educational videos, etc.

Step by Step

  1. Preliminary Research: Each group should research the planets in the solar system and their characteristics. Based on this research, the group should select a planet for the installation of the "Pax" station.

  2. Station Planning: The students, taking into account the characteristics of the chosen planet, should draw a plan of the "Pax" station and define how each human need will be met on that site.

  3. Report: Students should write a detailed report explaining their choice of planet, the design of the "Pax" station, the challenges encountered, and how they were overcome. The report should include:

    • Introduction - Contextualize the project, the chosen planet, and the importance of the topic.
    • Development - Detail the design of the "Pax" station, explaining the solutions found for the specific conditions of the chosen planet.
    • Conclusion - Discuss what was learned through the project, its difficulties and achievements. Conclude by summarizing the main points.
    • Bibliography - Cite all sources used during the research and project.

The project should last for one month, from the formation of the groups to the submission of the final report.

Project Deliverables

The project will be delivered in the form of a written report. Each group should submit a report containing a detailed description of their interplanetary station project, including all sections specified above.

The final report should reflect all the work done during the month. It should demonstrate the research done by the students, the choices made during the elaboration of the project, and how challenges were overcome. The goal is for the report to be able to transmit the entire process and thinking behind the project, not just the final product.
