Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The objectives stage is essential for establishing a clear focus for the lesson. By defining what is expected to be achieved, students can better direct their efforts and attention during practical activities. This also helps align expectations and ensures that everyone involved is aware of the learning goals. Furthermore, this section serves to ensure that students understand the importance and applicability of theater in various everyday situations.

Main Objectives:

1. Provide students with an understanding of what theater is and how it manifests in different contexts and cultures.

2. Enable students to identify and describe the main features of theater, such as the presence of actors, sets, and dialogues.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage active participation from students in the discussion about theater, promoting the expression of ideas and opinions.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction stage serves to engage students and connect the knowledge acquired at home with practice in the classroom. The proposed problem situations encourage students to think creatively and to apply theatrical concepts practically. The contextualization helps to show the relevance of theater in the real world, increasing interest and awareness of the importance of studying theater for cultural and social understanding.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine that you are actors in a play. What would your dialogues be like? What kind of emotions would you like to convey to the audience?

2. Think of a well-known fairy tale, like 'Little Red Riding Hood'. How would you transform this story into a play? What would the settings be like and how would the characters move on stage?

Contextualization

Theater is not just a form of entertainment; it has been used throughout history to tell stories, preserve cultures, and convey important messages. For example, Shakespeare's plays portray universal themes such as love, betrayal, and ambition, which still resonate today. Additionally, theater can be found in many forms, from grand productions to street performances and even in indigenous cultures, where they are used to pass traditions from generation to generation.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The development stage aims to put into practice the theatrical concepts previously discussed by students, allowing them to explore creativity and expression through different types of theatrical activities. These activities are designed to be collaborative, enabling students to work as a team to create and present their pieces, developing not only theatrical skills but also social and communication competencies.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - The Party on Stage

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop students' creativity and acting skills using basic theater elements like dialogues and movement.

- Description: Students will be divided into groups of up to 5 people and each group will represent a party scenario, such as a birthday, a June festival, a masquerade ball, among others. They will need to create a small theatrical piece that takes place in this scenario, using elements like dialogues, movement on stage, and facial expressions.

- Instructions:

  • Choose a type of party to represent.

  • Decide who the characters will be and what they will be doing at the party.

  • Write simple dialogues that represent the interaction between characters.

  • Think about how the actors will move on stage to represent the actions of the characters.

  • Prepare for a brief presentation to the class.

Activity 2 - Drama in the Streets

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Explore students' ability to create and express emotions in a theatrical scene, as well as work on conflict resolution creatively.

- Description: In this activity, students will create a small drama scene that could occur in a public area, such as a square or a market. They will need to think of a conflict that can be resolved in the scene, using theater techniques to express the characters' emotions.

- Instructions:

  • Choose a public location for the scene.

  • Create characters that will have a conflict to be resolved.

  • Develop dialogues, including the resolution of the conflict.

  • Practice the scene, working on facial and body expressions of the actors.

  • Present the scene to the class.

Activity 3 - Shadow Theater

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Introduce students to shadow theater, developing coordination and creativity skills in storytelling.

- Description: Students will use a white screen to create a shadow theater. They will need to create a short story that can be told only with projected shadows, using simple objects and their hands to form silhouettes.

- Instructions:

  • Prepare the white screen and a strong light source.

  • Decide on the story you want to tell.

  • Choose the objects or shapes that will be used to create the silhouettes.

  • Practice the movement of objects and hands to tell the story clearly.

  • Present the story to classmates, who will try to guess the plot based only on the shadows.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this feedback stage is to consolidate students' learning, allowing them to reflect on practical activities and share insights with each other. The group discussion helps reinforce understanding of theatrical concepts and the skills developed, as well as promote an environment of collaborative and reflective learning. This stage also serves to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities and student engagement.

Group Discussion

Start the group discussion with a general review of the activities performed, asking each group how they approached the challenge of creating and presenting a play. Encourage students to share their experiences, including positives and challenges they faced. Use questions like 'What did you discover about theater that you didn't know before?' and 'How did you resolve conflicts in the scenes you created?' to guide the conversation.

Key Questions

1. What skills do you think were most important in creating and presenting your theater pieces?

2. How did collaboration with your peers help in the creative process?

3. What could you do differently next time to improve your presentations?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The conclusion stage is essential to ensure that students have consolidated the knowledge acquired throughout the lesson. Summarizing key points helps in retention of learning while the connection between theory and practice reinforces the relevance of theater in different contexts. Additionally, discussing theater's real-life applications aims to inspire students to continue exploring and valuing this art form in their own experiences.

Summary

In conclusion, the teacher should summarize the main concepts covered about theater, recalling the definition of theater, how it manifests in different contexts, and the essential characteristics such as the presence of actors, sets, and dialogues. It is important to recap the practical activities conducted, like 'The Party on Stage', 'Drama in the Streets', and 'Shadow Theater', highlighting what each taught and how the students applied theatrical concepts.

Theory Connection

During the lesson, the theory about theater was directly applied in practical activities, allowing students a deeper understanding through experimentation. The activities of scene creation and group presentations not only reinforced theoretical knowledge but also developed skills in expression, collaboration, and creativity. This practical approach ensured that students could see the relevance of theater in their daily lives and in different cultures.

Closing

Finally, the teacher should highlight the importance of theater as a form of cultural and social expression, capable of teaching values, promoting empathy, and understanding among people. Theater is not limited to the stage, but is present in many aspects of society, from grand productions to street performances and traditional rituals. Understanding and appreciating theater helps students develop a broader and more critical view of the world around them.
