The purpose of this stage is to introduce students to the theme of the birth of cities, highlighting the social and economic transformations that occurred with the development of agriculture. Furthermore, it aims to promote self-knowledge and social awareness, aiding students in recognizing and understanding the emotions related to these historical changes and reflecting on their implications for contemporary society.

Main Goals

2. Analyze the impact of agricultural development on the formation of cities and social organization.

3. Identify the emotions associated with social and economic changes in antiquity and reflect on how these transformations affect collective well-being.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Connection with the Present: Mindfulness Session

The emotional warm-up activity will be a Mindfulness session. Mindfulness is a practice that helps students to be present in the moment, enhancing concentration and focus. During the activity, students will be guided to connect with their emotions and thoughts, promoting an environment of calm and mindfulness.

1. Preparing the Environment: Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the ground and hands resting on their laps. Ensure that the environment is quiet.

2. Initial Breathing: Instruct students to close their eyes and begin to breathe deeply, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. Repeat this breathing cycle three times.

3. Body Awareness: Guide students to pay attention to their bodies, starting from their feet and slowly moving up to their heads. Ask them to notice any tension or discomfort and try to relax those areas.

4. Focus on Breathing: Direct students' attention to their natural breathing. They do not need to change the rhythm, just observe how the air enters and exits their body. If the mind gets distracted, gently guide the focus back to the breath.

5. Recognition of Emotions: While they continue focusing on their breath, ask students to recognize any emotion present at that moment, without judgment. They can imagine that they are observing these emotions like clouds passing through the sky.

6. Closing: Gradually, ask students to start moving their fingers and toes, bringing their attention back to the surrounding environment. When ready, they can open their eyes and prepare for class.

Content Contextualization

The first cities emerged thousands of years ago and brought about significant social and economic transformations. The development of agriculture allowed people to settle in one place, form communities, and create more complex social structures. These changes not only shaped the way we live today but also profoundly influenced our emotions and social relations. Imagine what it would be like to live in a time when agriculture was just beginning, and people were learning to cooperate and coexist in larger communities. These transformations, while challenging, brought with them a sense of belonging and the need to develop social and emotional skills to navigate the new social dynamics.

Development

Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

Theoretical Framework

Duration: (25 - 30 minutes)

1. Introduction to the Birth of Cities: Explain that the first cities emerged around 5,000 years ago, primarily in the Fertile Crescent (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus Valley). These cities developed due to agricultural practices that allowed for large-scale food production.

2. Development of Agriculture: Detail how the domestication of plants and animals enabled people to settle in one place, forming stable communities. Agriculture allowed for the production of food surpluses, leading to population growth and the need for social organization.

3. Social and Economic Structure: Describe how cities were socially organized. There was a clear hierarchy, with leaders or rulers, farmers, artisans, and traders. The division of labor allowed for specialization, and trade became an important activity.

4. Technological Innovations: Explain the key technological innovations of the time, such as the plow, the wheel, and irrigation systems, which increased agricultural efficiency and allowed for city development.

5. Life in the Cities: Describe what life was like in the first cities. People lived in densely populated communities with houses made of clay and bricks. There were temples, markets, and administrative centers.

6. Social and Emotional Impact of Changes: Discuss how these social and economic transformations impacted people's emotions. Community life required the development of social and emotional skills, such as cooperation, empathy, and conflict resolution.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (35 - 40 minutes)

Building an Ancient City

In this activity, students will be divided into groups and will be tasked with building a model of an ancient city using recyclable materials. Each group will represent a different city and must include elements such as houses, temples, markets, and irrigation systems.

1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 4 to 5 students. Each group will represent one of the first cities in the Fertile Crescent.

2. Materials Distribution: Provide recyclable materials such as cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, paper, glue, scissors, and paints.

3. Model Planning: Ask the groups to plan what their city will look like, considering essential elements such as houses, temples, markets, and irrigation systems.

4. Model Construction: Allow enough time for the groups to build their models. Encourage them to collaborate and divide tasks.

5. Presentation: Each group should present their model to the class, explaining the included elements and the reasons for their choices.

6. Discussion and Feedback: After the presentations, guide a discussion about what they learned regarding life in ancient cities and how social and emotional skills were important for building these communities.

Group Discussion

After the construction and presentation of the models, start a group discussion using the RULER method. First, Recognize the students' emotions while engaging in the activity. Ask how they felt while working in groups and building something together. Next, help them Understand the causes of those emotions by relating them to cooperation and task division. Name the emotions accurately, encouraging students to use terms like 'pride', 'frustration', or 'joy'. Encourage them to Express these emotions appropriately, whether by complimenting peers or discussing difficulties faced. Finally, discuss ways to Regulate these emotions, such as using breathing techniques or asking for help when needed. This reflection will help students internalize the socioemotional skills practiced during the activity.

Conclusion

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Conduct a group reflection on the challenges faced during the model construction. Ask students to write about how they felt at different moments during the activity and how they managed those emotions. Then, foster a discussion where students can share their experiences and strategies used to deal with challenging situations. Encourage them to discuss moments of cooperation, frustration, joy, and how they utilized their emotional regulation skills.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage self-assessment and emotional regulation, helping students identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations. By reflecting on their emotions and behaviors, students will be able to develop a greater understanding of themselves and enhance their socioemotional skills, applying them in future contexts.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

To conclude, ask students to set personal and academic goals related to the content of the class. Explain that these goals may include learning more about a specific ancient civilization, improving their teamwork skills, or developing techniques to better manage their emotions in cooperative situations.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Learn more about the first civilizations and their characteristics.

2. Improve collaboration and teamwork skills.

3. Develop emotional regulation techniques for cooperative situations.

4. Enhance the ability to present work and ideas to the class.

5. Reflect on the impact of social and economic transformations on daily life. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning. By setting personal and academic goals, students will be able to continue developing their skills and knowledge in a continuous manner, promoting growth both academically and personally.
