Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan is designed to establish a solid foundation of understanding about the human respiratory system. By focusing on the components and their functions, students will be able to apply this knowledge in practical and theoretical situations, as well as develop a deeper understanding of how the human body maintains the vital process of respiration.

Main Objectives:

1. Familiarize students with the components of the human respiratory system, including lungs, trachea, and bronchi.

2. Explore the specific functions of each component in the process of respiration and how they interact to ensure the body's oxygenation.

Side Objectives:

  1. Stimulate students' curiosity and interest in the importance of caring for the respiratory system.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction serves to engage students and connect the knowledge they acquired at home with practical situations and curiosities that spark interest. The problem situations encourage students to think critically about the functioning of the respiratory system in real contexts, preparing them for practical activities. The contextualization, in turn, aims to broaden students' understanding of the relevance of studying the respiratory system, showing how it is crucial for life and how it manifests in different forms in the natural world.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you are running very fast and feel short of breath. What happens to your body at that moment and how is the respiratory system responding to try to meet this need for oxygen?

2. If a person is in a very polluted air environment, how does this affect the respiratory system's ability to function properly? What adaptations can the body make to deal with this situation?

Contextualization

The respiratory system is essential for our survival, but we often do not notice its function until something goes wrong, such as in situations of shortness of breath or during a cold. Interestingly, some animals have incredible adaptations in their respiratory systems, like the lungs of birds, which are very efficient at extracting oxygen from the air, allowing them to fly at extreme altitudes. These curiosities can help understand the importance of keeping the respiratory system healthy.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The development stage is designed to allow students to apply the knowledge acquired about the respiratory system in a practical and interactive way. Through the proposed activities, students will be able to visualize and manipulate complex concepts, such as gas exchange in the lungs and the influence of air pollution on respiratory health. This practical approach aims to solidify students' theoretical understanding and encourage critical thinking and teamwork.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Paper Divers

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Visually understand the process of respiration and gas exchange in the lungs.

- Description: In this activity, students will simulate gas exchange in the lungs using a practical experiment. A lung model will be created with an air balloon inside a transparent container, representing the thoracic cavity. By pressing the 'diaphragm,' which will be simulated by a paper plate, air will exit the balloon, representing expiration. When the plate is pulled up, air enters back into the balloon, symbolizing inspiration.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Distribute the materials for each group: balloon, cut PET bottle, paper plate, and rubber band.

  • Demonstrate how to assemble the lung model by placing the balloon inside the bottle.

  • Ask the students to discuss and draw the diagram of the experiment.

  • Each group assembles their lung model and performs the breathing simulation, noting their observations.

  • The students present their findings and discuss the functioning of the respiratory system with the class.

Activity 2 - Air Detectives

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Identify and understand the effects of air pollution on the respiratory system.

- Description: Students will become 'detectives,' investigating the air quality in different locations of the school. They will use test tubes with chemical indicators to test the air for the presence of pollutants. Each group will visit a predetermined location, such as the cafeteria, the gym, and the classroom, collecting air samples and comparing the results.

- Instructions:

  • Organize the students into groups of 5.

  • Instruct students on how to use the test tubes and chemical indicators.

  • Assign a different location for each group to collect air samples.

  • Ask them to note their observations and hypotheses about the visited locations.

  • Each group presents their investigation results, discussing possible pollution sources and their impact on respiratory health.

  • Conduct a discussion on how to improve air quality in the detected places.

Activity 3 - Wind Builders

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Visualize and understand the movement of air and its importance for respiration.

- Description: In this activity, students will build windmills using recyclable materials to practically understand how wind and breathing are related. They will observe how wind force can be used to turn the blades of the windmills and discuss the implications of this movement in the context of the respiratory system.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Provide recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, popsicle sticks, and cardboard.

  • Instruct students to build a functional windmill model.

  • Conduct an outdoor test to check the windmills' operation in different wind intensities.

  • Discuss how the movement of the windmill blades relates to the movement of air in the lungs.

  • Ask each group to make a short presentation about what they learned.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate the knowledge acquired during the practical activities, allowing students to articulate and reflect on what they have learned. The group discussion helps develop communication and argumentation skills, as well as ensuring that all students have understood the fundamental concepts of the respiratory system. This moment also serves for the teacher to assess students' understanding and clarify any remaining doubts.

Group Discussion

At the end of the activities, gather all students for a group discussion. Start the conversation by recalling the objectives of the lesson and asking each group what they discovered in the activities. Encourage students to share their experiences, difficulties, and what surprised them the most. Use directed questions to ensure that all aspects of the respiratory system have been understood and explored.
