Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Objectives stage is crucial to establish a clear foundation of what is expected of students by the end of the lesson. By defining specific objectives, students can direct their focus and efforts to the most important aspects of learning, ensuring that the proposed activities align with learning goals. This section also serves to motivate students by showing the relevance and applicability of the skills that will be developed.

2. Enhance the skill to deduce implicit and explicit information in texts, using active reading strategies.

Introduction

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The Introduction stage serves to engage students and connect the content previously studied with practice in the classroom. By presenting problem situations, it stimulates reflection on the applicability of learning, preparing the ground for the execution of practical activities. The contextualization highlights the importance of reading and textual comprehension in the real world, motivating students to value and improve these skills.

1. Imagine you are reading a book and do not understand the meaning of an important word for the plot. How would you solve this problem without a dictionary by your side?

2. Think that you received a letter with very important information, but it is written in a confusing way. How would you ensure that you understood the messages contained in the letter correctly?

Contextualization

The ability to understand and interpret texts is essential in various everyday situations, from following precise instructions in manuals to understanding contracts and legal texts. Moreover, significant career advancements, such as passing an important exam or securing a job, often depend on the skill of textual comprehension. Therefore, improving this skill not only facilitates academic life but is also crucial for professional and personal success.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The Development stage is designed to place students at the center of learning, allowing them to actively apply the reading and interpretation skills they studied at home. Through playful and interactive activities, students have the opportunity to work in teams, discuss reading strategies, and share different perspectives, reinforcing learning and comprehension of the text. This practical approach aims to solidify theoretical knowledge in a meaningful learning context.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Reading Detectives

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop critical reading and interpretation skills, as well as promote teamwork and argumentative skills.

- Description: In this activity, students will become literary detectives, using their reading skills to solve a mystery. They will be presented with a short text that contains clues and essential information to solve a puzzle. The text includes details that must be interpreted correctly to uncover the hidden story.

- Instructions:

• Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

• Distribute a copy of the text to each group.

• Ask the students to read the text carefully, highlighting words or phrases they consider important for understanding the plot.

• Each group should discuss internally the possible interpretations of the text and formulate a hypothesis about the solution to the mystery.

• After 20 minutes of reading and discussion, each group will present their interpretation and justify their conclusions based on the text.

• The teacher will discuss the different interpretations and reveal the solution to the mystery, if there is one, fostering a debate about the reading strategies used.

Activity 2 - Story Circle

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Promote creativity, collaboration, and textual comprehension, as well as practice writing and narrative continuity.

- Description: Students will participate in an activity where each will contribute a part of the story, forming a literary circle. The challenge will be to maintain coherence and comprehension of the text, since each student must build on what the previous peer wrote, without altering the overall meaning of the narrative.

- Instructions:

• Form a large circle with all the chairs in the room.

• The first student starts the story with two or three sentences, which must include a setting and an initial conflict.

• The adjacent student continues the story, developing the conflict and introducing a new element into the narrative.

• The process continues, with each student adding their contribution until the story returns to the first student.

• Each student must read aloud the part of the story they added, so that everyone can follow the development of the plot.

• At the end, discuss as a group the difficulties and strategies used to maintain textual cohesion.

Activity 3 - Interactive Mind Map

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop skills in organizing and visualizing information, as well as reinforcing textual comprehension and the ability to synthesize.

- Description: Using a mind map, students will map out the structure of a text they read previously, connecting characters, main events, and central ideas. This map will be presented interactively, where each group explains their interpretation and connections to the class.

- Instructions:

• Provide materials for each group to create a mind map on a large poster.

• Students must discuss and decide how they will organize the information so that it makes sense visually and textually.

• Each group presents their map to the class, explaining the connections and reasoning behind the chosen structure.

• After all presentations, promote a discussion about the different approaches and what each group considered most relevant in structuring the mind map.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning, allowing students to articulate the knowledge acquired and reflect on the learning process. Through group discussion, students have the opportunity to hear different perspectives and strategies, enriching the understanding of the theme and promoting critical reflection on reading and textual interpretation skills. This stage also serves for the teacher to individually and collectively assess the progress of students and identify areas that may need reinforcement or review.

Group Discussion

To initiate the group discussion, the teacher should ask each group to briefly share their experiences during the activities, focusing on how they applied reading and interpretation strategies to solve the proposed challenges. Then, the teacher can guide the discussion for students to reflect on the difficulties encountered and the strategies that were most effective.
