Required Materialsmysterious texts prepared by the teacher, printed or digital copies of the texts for students, writing materials (pens, pencils, markers), possibly access to computers or tablets for writing and editing texts, adequate space for theatrical presentations, any supporting materials necessary for the presentations (costumes, props)

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 7 minutes)

The Objectives stage is crucial to direct the focus of students and the teacher towards the specific learning goals of the lesson. By clearly establishing what is expected to be achieved, it facilitates the preparation and engagement of students, as well as the assessment of progress during and after the lesson. This section is designed to ensure that everyone involved has a clear understanding of what is essential to learn about substantive subordinate clauses, paving the way for effective practical application of the previously studied theoretical content.

Main Objectives:

1. Empower students to identify and classify substantive subordinate clauses in diverse texts, recognizing their function to replace or complement a noun in the main clause.

2. Develop students' ability to transform substantive subordinate clauses into simple nouns while maintaining the coherence and grammatical structure of the text.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage active student participation in identifying substantive subordinate clauses in practical examples, promoting discussion and debate among peers to reinforce collaborative learning.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The Introduction stage is designed to activate students' prior knowledge about substantive subordinate clauses and contextualize the importance of the topic in practical language use. The proposed problem situations encourage students to apply previously studied concepts, preparing the ground for a deeper discussion and practical application during the lesson. The contextualization aims to show the relevance of studying substantive subordinate clauses in the real world, motivating students and highlighting the applicability of the content in various communicative situations.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Consider the following sentence: 'It is essential that all students study for the final exams.' Identify the substantive subordinate clause and explain which element it is replacing in the main clause.

2. Analyzing the text 'The fear that the rain would disrupt the event was evident.', locate the substantive subordinate clause and rewrite the sentence with a noun that performs the same function in the main clause.

Contextualization

Substantive subordinate clauses are essential in constructing meaning in complex texts, allowing for greater fluency and clarity in communication. Interestingly, the ability to recognize and use them correctly is not only an academic aspect but also fundamental in everyday situations, such as in writing formal emails or understanding legal texts. Moreover, many renowned literary works extensively employ this type of structure, enriching reading and perception of the language.

Development

Duration: (70 - 80 minutes)

The Development stage is designed to allow students to practically and contextually apply the concepts of substantive subordinate clauses studied previously. By working in groups, students will have the opportunity to discuss, argue, and collaborate, which not only reinforces learning but also develops social and communication skills. The proposed activities are designed to be interactive and engaging, ensuring that students are actively involved in the learning process.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Substantive Detectives

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop skills in analyzing and identifying substantive subordinate clauses in context, promoting teamwork and linguistic argumentation.

- Description: In this playful activity, students will become linguistic detectives to uncover substantive subordinate clauses in a mysterious text. The text, prepared in advance by the teacher, will contain various substantive subordinate clauses mixed with false propositions and guesses, challenging students to separate the wheat from the chaff.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Distribute copies of the mysterious text to each group.

  • Ask each group to identify and underline all substantive subordinate clauses in the text.

  • The groups should then discuss and justify their choices, explaining which noun each clause is substituting or complementing.

  • Each group will present their findings, and the class will discuss the correct answers.

Activity 2 - The Noun Show

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Encourage creativity and practical understanding of substantive subordinate clauses, as well as strengthen presentation skills.

- Description: Students will create small plays where the dialogues will be predominantly composed of substantive subordinate clauses. This activity will not only reinforce understanding of this type of clause but also provide an opportunity for students to exercise creativity and dramatic skills.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Each group will receive a base scene or theme to develop a small theatrical dialogue.

  • The dialogues must be composed mainly of substantive subordinate clauses, which must be identified and justified by the group.

  • Groups will have time to rehearse and present their plays to the class.

  • After the presentations, discuss with the class how substantive subordinate clauses were used and their function in the scenes.

Activity 3 - Substantive Story Builders

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop the ability to create narrative texts using substantive subordinate clauses effectively, as well as promote collaboration and creativity.

- Description: Students, in groups, will build narratives where substantive subordinate clauses play essential roles in the plot. The challenge is to create a cohesive and interesting story that maximizes the use of this type of clause.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of no more than 5 students.

  • Each group will receive a set of nouns and must create a story that uses them, primarily through substantive subordinate clauses.

  • After creating, each group will read their story to the class, which should identify and discuss the substantive subordinate clauses used.

  • Promote voting for the most creative and well-constructed story.

  • Discuss with the class how substantive subordinate clauses helped develop the narrative.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate the practical learning obtained during group activities, allowing students to articulate and reflect on their knowledge. The group discussion helps identify comprehension gaps and reinforces already learned concepts, as well as promotes communication and argumentation skills. This collective feedback also serves for the teacher to assess students' understanding and clarify any remaining doubts.

Group Discussion

Begin the group discussion by inviting each group to share their findings and results from the activities carried out. Suggest that they start by describing the process they used to identify substantive subordinate clauses and discuss any challenges they faced during the task. Encourage students to explain the reasoning behind their choices and how they applied prior knowledge in new contexts. This is a moment for students to learn from each other and question the decisions made, forming a richer collective understanding of the topic.

Key Questions

1. What were the main challenges in identifying and classifying substantive subordinate clauses in the text?

2. How can understanding substantive subordinate clauses help in interpreting more complex texts?

3. Was there any surprise or interesting discovery during the activities that changed your perception of using substantive subordinate clauses?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to ensure that students have a clear and consolidated understanding of the concepts learned during the lesson, linking theory to practice and highlighting the applicability of knowledge in real contexts. In addition, it aims to reinforce the importance of substantive subordinate clauses in the use of the Portuguese language, preparing students to employ these structures consciously and effectively in their academic and professional activities.

Summary

In the conclusion of the lesson, the teacher should summarize the main points addressed regarding substantive subordinate clauses, recalling how they function as substitutes or complements of nouns in the main clauses. It is essential to recap key examples discussed and the strategies used to identify and classify these structures in the text.

Theory Connection

During the lesson, the connection between the previously studied theory and practice was established through interactive activities such as 'Substantive Detectives' and 'The Noun Show', where students were able to directly apply their knowledge in challenging and creative contexts. This practical approach helped solidify theoretical understanding and the importance of subordinate clauses in everyday language use.

Closing

Finally, the teacher should highlight the relevance of substantive subordinate clauses in daily life, such as in academic and professional writing, and even in literature. Understanding and knowing how to use these structures correctly enriches not only the ability to read and interpret more complex texts but also the capacity for clear and effective expression in various situations.
